9 Tattoo Aftercare Tips

What to do after getting a tattoo!

Page 2: 9 Tattoo Aftercare Tips

1. Listen to your tattoo artist.

• After your tattoo artist is finished with your tattoo, he will give you specific instructions on how to care for your particular tattoo.

• He will know which aftercare methods work best for his work so take his advice seriously and do what he says.

2. Keep it moist.

• It’s critical to keep your tattoo moist right after you get it. If you let it dry out, a thick scab will form on top of it, which will not only slow the healing process, but also damage the tattoo.

3. Do not soak it.

• Do not swim, take a bath (showering is ok of course), or get in the sauna for at least two weeks after getting a tattoo.

• Exposing your tattoo to too much water can draw the ink out of your skin and therefore distort the tattoo.

4. Avoid sun exposure.

• Keeping your tattoo out of the sun is extremely important because the sun’s rays can cause the skin where your tattoo is to blister. It can also bleach some of the color from your tattoo.

5. Keep it clean.

• After you take your bandage off (which should be between 4 and 24 hours after getting the tattoo), make sure you gently clean the tattoo.

• Use warm water, antibacterial soap, and your hands (not a cloth or sponge) to gently rub the tattoo to get rid of excess blood, plasma, or ink.

6. Watch the swelling.

• It’s normal for your tattoo to swell within the first few days. However, if it gets more and more swollen and painful, contact your tattoo artist and your doctor for advice.

7. Do not scratch it.

• It’s normal for your tattoo to form small scabs as it heals. Unfortunately, when your tattoo heals and starts to form scabs, it will get itchy.

• Do not scratch or pick at your tattoo. Doing so will prolong the healing process and damage your tattoo.

8. Do not wear tight clothing.

• Don’t wear tight clothing where your tattoo is, at least. When your tattoo starts to heal, it will leak plasma and excess ink, which can cause tight clothing to stick to it.

• If your shirt sleeve (for instance) gets stuck to your tattoo, it will hurt to take off and it may rip off any fresh, new scabs.
