Quantifiable success based on crash reduction factors:

Type of Safety Bond WorkCrash

Reduction Factor

Highway widening 30%

Concrete or cable median barrier 55%

Left-turn lanes 25%

Continuous left-turn lanes 50%

Grade separations 80%

Convert existing four-lane undivided highways to four-lane divided highways 40%

Expanding use of proven countermeasures = More lives saved

13

• We have not reached the limits of our capability to reduce crashes and injuries and to save lives.

• We are analyzing the number of lives that can be saved over the next five years by expanding the implementation of these countermeasures.

Expanding use of proven countermeasures = More lives saved

14

The Texas Traffic Safety Task Force will recommend a concerted effort utilizing:

• proven highway safety engineering countermeasures

• driver behavior and education

• increased enforcement

to reduce crashes and save lives on Texas roadways.
