PREPARATION FOR THE HOME VISIT

THE HOME VISIT IS THE CORE OF SOCIAL WORKMANAGEMENT DECISION

GUIDING PRINCIPLE – TEAM’S ETHOS - Due to the brief nature of Solution Focus as an intervention and D-BIT as a service we have to capitalise on the time that we are engaging with the family and as such perform our duties in a focused succinct manner. Meaning when with the family we will multi-task.

As a social worker we are required to engage in Child Focus Parent respecting authoritive social work; which means that we sometimes have to redirect the family and we have to engage in activities that are more administrative initially to allow the opportunity to engage in therapeutic work in the follow-up visit.

PREPARATION FOR THE HOME VISIT

ASSIGNMENT OF CASE TO WORKER - PRE-VISIT REFLECTION

• WHAT’S THE WORKER’S STATE OF MIND AND BEING?

• WHAT IS THE WORKER BRINGING WITH THEM – D-BIT’S

VIEWS ETHOS?

• WHAT IS THE TASK THE WORKER HAS TO DO?

• WHAT WILL BE THE FOCUS OF THE LANGUAGE THAT THE

WORKER WILL BE USING WHEN THEY GET TO THE HOME?

USE OF SOLUTION FOCUSED CONSULTATION

Guiding Principle:- Professor Harry Ferguson

of the University of Nottingham in reference

to What does the practitioner do with the

time they have? If they have all the time,

what would be the best use of the time? The

home visit is at the core of Social Work –

What’s the worker’s state of mind and

being? What are they bringing with them;

what the task they have to do is

Reflective Social Work practice

• To provide a forum in which the worker prior to initiating work

with the family will engage in reflection to include possible

“Pitfalls to them remaining solution oriented” when working

with families

SOLUTION FOCUSED CONSULTATION

Potential Pitfalls could be: -

Problem Talk- Focus on the solution and the

first signs of it appearing. This can shortcut

many hours of fruitless delving into the

problem

Use of Why and What which can lead to

POST VISIT – REFLECTIVE SUPERVISION TIME

During supervision using as my guide the information

received from Professor Harry Ferguson of the University

of Nottingham in reference to What does the practitioner

do with the time they have? If they have all the time, what

would be the best use of the time? The home visit is at

the core of Social Work – What’s the worker’s state of

mind and being? What are they bringing with them; what

the task they have to do is.

POST VISIT REFLECTIVE SUPERVISION

The following question will assist you in maximising the use of the

consultation process:-

• What are your best hopes from our consultation today? What will you

take away from this consultation that will be beneficial to you in creating

more value in your roles as a Solution Focused Practitioner?

• Which of all your ideas is most likely to enable that?

• What would delight you to hear the families you support say a few days

or weeks after this consultation that you are doing different?

• Which of your many ideas is most likely to allow that to happen?

Barry Mason - Having a Dyad Thinking Systemically

• DID YOU FIND WORKING WITH THE FAMILY DIFFICULT?

• IF SO HOW COME – WHAT’S GOING ON WITH ME

• HOW AM I CONTRIBUTING TO THIS IMPRESSON OF THIS

FAMILY?

SUPPORTING THE WORKER IN TAKING THIS RELATIONAL

RISK AT THEIR OWN PACE

POST VISIT REFLECTIVE SUPERVISION

When we grow up in our culture we are brought up with messages about how we cope, sometimes the messages are how to do things within our families.

• To provide support for the worker in examining hidden messages which they have brought from their own families and other work background which may shape their thinking about the families and their way of working with the families. Do they still have the same views now or has it changed?
