Simple Steps to Keep Heating

Use Central Heating, Not Electric Heaters
• Electricity is expensive• It is almost always cheaper to use the central heating
Recommended Room Temperature is 18-21oC
• A drop of 1oC saves about £60 a year.• If the thermostat is in the hallway, you might need to
play about with the setting to get it comfortable in the living room
Learn how to use your heating programmer
• They vary from basic to digital• Set to switch on 30 minutes before you get up, and
off 30 minutes before you go to bed• Set to a background temperature (15oC) overnight or
if you are going out for a while
Set Your Thermostatic Radiator Valves Differently for Different Rooms
• 2-3 in bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom• 4-5 in the living room
Put radiator reflectors behind radiators on outside walls
• Cuts the heat you lose to the wall and outside• You can buy it at a DIY store• Or make it using cardboard and tin foil
Shut windows before putting the heating on
• Otherwise most of your heat will be lost outside
• Keeps warm air off cold windows• But avoid covering radiators with the curtains• Don’t dry clothes on radiators – stops the heating
working well and causes condensation
Close the Curtains at Dusk
• Dress warmly• Drink lots of warm drinks
Use a blanket in the evening
• They steal heat!

Energy Supplier Switching
• Consider switching energy supplier – its easy and costs nothing to look! Do at least once a year.
• You will need to know your plan and how much gas and electricity you used in the last year - £ or kWh
• You could save £100’s• If you don’t want to move supplier, check with your
existing supplier that you are on the cheapest tariff
