Malawi faces a number of climate change induced risks:

•Floods•Droughts•Stormy rains•Strong winds

It is estimated that the 2015 floods affected 1,101,364 people, displaced 230,000 and killed 106 people

of the population lives in rural areas with the majority engaged in smallholder rain-fed agriculture andvulnerable to climate change impacts

What is transformational about the What is transformational about the project?project?

• Innovative use of mobile phone and ICT technologies for ‘last mile’ dissemination of climate information;

• Paradigm shift in demand-based model for diffusing climate and agriculture related information and services;

• Enhance capacity of communities to understand and plan for climate and disaster risks through behavioral change;

• Facilitate integration of more effective climate change adaptation strategies at national, district and community-level into development plans;

• Communities will be targeted with area-specific early warning information and messages for them to take appropriate action

How the project fits within national How the project fits within national prioritiespriorities

•National DRM Policy 3rd Policy Priority Area: “Development and strengthening of a people-centred early warning system” Providing tailor-made & area-specific early warning information; Scale-up community-based EWS in flood-disaster prone areas.

• 6th Policy Prority Area: “Strengthening preparedness capacity for effective response and recovery” Strengthening the EOCs; Strengthening communities capacities for use of EWS/CI in

preparedness for response to climate related disasters; and Build capacity of national, district and community level actors in

disaster and climate risk management.
