UPSIDC management has recently made contact with big companies which have specialization in solar power plants and got positive response. There are
possibilities that around 120 acres of land would be allocated for a solar power plant company at Lalitpur within couple of weeks. There are indications that land
for another solar power plant would be allotted in Kannauj district.

Now - Why it matters?
The shortest possible way to combat energy deficit is to enhance the use of solar energy applications in Industrial and commercial sectors.
Quick Facts
There is a vast potential for use of solar energy devices / systems in industries for process heat and other thermal applications.
India is consuming over 100 million tones of oil every year for various uses.
40% is being consumed in the industrial sector alone.
Further, 40-50% of this consumption is in thermal form alone with temperature range below 250 C which comes to around 15 million tones of fuel oil per annum.
Wide Industry Usages
The applications include mercerizing, drying and finishing in textile industry; drying, dissolving, thickening, leaching and distillation in chemical industry; cooking, drying and canning in food industry, craft pulping, bleaching and drying in pulp and paper industry, drying and cleaning in leather industry and various such applications in many more industries.
The working fluid required for these applications is either pressurized hot water, steam or hot air in temperature range of 60-250 C.
Application : SOLAR THERMAL
Solar Water Heaters (SWH) Non-pressurized solar water heating (SWH)
Gravity and natural convection for water movement
It takes four hours to heat up the water of 300 litters up to 45 Degree in peak winter season and 60 Degree in moderate season and 90 degree in peak hot season.
Pressurized Solar Water Heating
Uses Motors, tank is separate than the collector unit and no gravity is required.
No contact of waster with copper tubes ( used for heating ) and are rust free
Ether is used to absorb and pass the heat.
The copper tubes are filled with ether which expands quickly when sun radiations fall at tubes.
In industrial where quick heat exchange is required, the heat exchangers are also used.
Cost and benefit
A 10,000 liters per day capacity system may cost between Rs. 15-18 lakhs and can save around 14,000 liters of fuel oil per year for a
period of about 20 years, the life of the system.

Solar air heating systems
These are useful in food processing industries for drying of various food products.
These industries generally require hot air at low temperature (50-800C) as process heat for drying of products such as tea leaves/ coffee beans, and also for processing of fruits, spices, cereals, mushroom, papad, vegetables, fish, seafood etc. Hot air is also required in industries such as leather, textiles, chemicals, rubber, paper, pharmaceuticals etc.
Cost and Benefit
A typical system of 100 sq. m. of flat plate collector area may cost around Rs. 5-6 lakh which could save up to 6000 liters of
conventional fuel for a period of over 15-20 years.

Other Applications: SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAICS
Solar Lighting
Solar Power Plants from 10 KW to 20 MW
Solar Parks upto 20 MW
Solar Roof Based On Grid Power Generation
Solar Traffic Signals Lights
Power for Remote Terminal Units
Power for Telecommunication Towers and BSC and MSC
Building Integrated Photovoltaic System
Military signaling applications,
Solar water Pumping
Solar Lighting for Parking lots
Solar Lighting for Bus Stop Shelters and many more
Off Grid Systems
The off grid system has no link with Utility grid
Uses Solar Panels, Charge Controllers, Inverters, Deep Cycle Batteries
Battery are charged via solar radiation converted to electric current by Photovoltaic
On-grid systems Connected in line with utility grid
Have Two meters that measure electricity from Grid and Solar ( Import and Solar)
Some system utilizes bi-directional billing feature which reverses when electricity is sold to Grid and at the end the user pays for the net meter reading. In two meters system, when energy is sold to Grid, the export meter counts and when energy is bought from grid, import meter counts the power consumption and user has to pay the net reading of both meters. User/Power producer will be paid by the Utility if Utility has bought more and sold less.
