Highlights of 2016

Green SpaceCo-working

Co-working Space is..

• the design of the office that encourages interaction.

•Collaborative, low cost office for startups and free lancers.

•known to be creative flexible environment that encourage working together.

Green Space is : • A non-profit collaborative office space in Khartoum, initiated and managed by Kyomi NGO in partnership with Haggar Holding.

•Designed for hosting small youth initiatives and startups, providing flexible accommodation.

•Mainly targeting groups active in “Environment” & “Youth Empowerment” sectors.

•Suitable environment for coaching,mentoring, interaction, Knowledge/expertise exchange among hostedgroups and their volunteers.

•Organizing jointly capacity buildingprograms and projects for hostedgroups.

•Going to be an advocacy platformthat addresses groups’ challenges.

Green Space is :

Opened in March 2016 in Mohamed

Nageeb street in Khartoum with

rented furniture.

Temporarily stopped in Ramadan

(Jun-Aug) due to low reservation rate

and high expenses, and continued

funraising.

Re-opened in September 2016 in

Albaladia-west Str. in the middle of

Khartoum, with donated furniture and

equipment.

Space Size We started with 70 m2 apartment, then

extended to sum 150 m2.

The space is divided into 5 rooms plus

small storing space.

25 Co-working stations.

10 Laptops.

2 LED Screens and projector.

12 Small lockers.

Copier, printer, scanner.

Small kitchen: Cooler, boiler,

heater.

High speed Internet: Zain, Sudani.

Hosted Organizations & groups in 2016

• These equipment are sufficient to hostmore than 10 small organizations,groups or startups.

• Running costs are shared betweenbeneficiaries, and the gap to be jointlyfundraised.

• The space size is subject for futureexpansion to host more groups with thesame concept.

Atmosphere

• Atmosphere is always friendly and supportive in the space.

• Some groups actively participate in the recycling the waste excreted in the space.

Organizations shared their

expertise and network

A startup business producinghandcraft and artistic recycling,had their first official workingplace in the space for reasonablecost.

The Space’s co-workers providedguidance and mentorship to theclubs young members.

Craftoum actively participated inspace’s decoration, and club’smembers have benefited fromworkshops in “Projects proposalwriting” and “English languagesessions” offered by other co-workers in the Green Space.

Rida for Integrated Energy Solutions

• Start-up business consists of twoengineers met for the first timein the Green Space and laterdesigned and applied for solar-powered projects tenders.

• Rida team benefits from theSpace as office. They daily meetpotential partners.

• Rida participates in openactivities in the space. Theyproposed a completely solar-powered training hall system.

• Green Space is now looking for afund to implement that system.

Coworkers created clubs to improve their languages’skills as well as having fun. These clubs provideeducational courses for beginners and regularspeaking sessions.English - German - French - JapaneseEnglish Club organized free courses for differentlevels. Mentored by co-workers and delivered by pro-bono lecturers. One of the courses is Preparation forIELTS language test.Friendly atmosphere and mutual hobbies strengthenco-workers bond.

Challenges• Co-working Spaces is a new concept in Sudan, yet, existing

coworking spaces in Khartoum lack proper mutual cooperation.

• Co-working groups are not used to prepare medium or long-term plansfor their activities. Green space sometimes fail to fulfill some suddenreservations in short notice.

• Running costs are still greater than paid membership fees.

• Equipment’s misuse led to some damages and increased expenditurescorrespondingly.

Recomendations• Proper documentation for this coworking experiment and recording

the learned lessons will impact positively on the idea’s prosperity andextension.

• Encouraging co-workers to jointly develop integrated projects willstrengthen groups and grow spirit of cooperation instead ofcompetition.

• Successful coordination and regular jointly organized activities willpromote the “Co-working” concept and will have a positive impacton attracting more co-workers.

Green Space in 2017• This year, Green Space is planning to organize and host more training

programs and more workshops in different fields with an attention togreen entrepreneurship and business. The intended training programshould equip and encourage young people to venture this kind ofbusiness.

• Training programs are attractive to the targeted community and theexistance of a schedule of training will increase the usage of the spaceand will raise the capacity of the beneficiary groups.

2017 Training Programs:

• Training will cover basic skills, environment, sustainability, advocacyand organizational management. We have contacted a group ofexperts and consultants requesting their personal support byproviding some Pro-bono consulting and training sessions.

• Green Space magazine:

• We plan to release a media outlet in the form of a digital magazine,promoting coworking, team spirit and introducing activities of thespace and its community.
