What is the Emerging Professionals

Leadership Institute? A Guide to Understanding if this Program is Right for You

Each year, preceding the Regional Summits, ICMA hosts the Emerging

Professionals Leadership Institute (EPLI).

It’s a program built specifically for early

career professionals and emerging leaders.

And it’s a way to build your leadership skill set

through the art and practice of leadership.

What’s so different about EPLI

compared to other ICMA programs

offered, you ask?

For two days, attendees have

the opportunity to…

Have a conversation with ICMA’s executive

director, Bob O’Neill. (Get your questions ready)

Attend a workshop led by Felicia Logan,

director of leadership development, ICMA (This year focuses on adding meaning and value to data

through story)

Receive advice on getting out of your comfort

zone, trusting your instincts, and responding to

emerging issues with creative ideas. (New workshop this year! You Have What It Takes To Be

a Resilient Leader)

There’s no other program that offers such

intense learning to a tailored group in such

a small amount of time.

And it’s only $99!

As a result of attending this workshop,

attendees will…

Be more comfortable with the challenge

of transitioning from peer to boss,

especially if you are a new supervisor.

Better understand the major

responsibilities of a supervisor.

Know the value of delegation to your

supervisory success and how to be an

effective delegator.

Be familiar with the characteristics of a

successful supervisor.

Be familiar with current thinking about

leadership and why it matters to you as a

supervisor.

Know the primary sources of influence

and how they affect your leadership

success.

Gain a broader view of practices that will

improve your leadership capacity.

Know what steps you can take to become

a stronger supervisory leader.

Here’s what people

have to say about

EPLI

“Last year I attended the ICMA Regional Summit and was very impressed with

the training Felicia Logan of ICMA University provided on effective facilitation

as a platform for leadership. Felicia is truly an outstanding trainer!

I immediately implemented this training in my professional and volunteer

leadership roles in the community. Over the past few months I have conducted

a number of trainings in my county using the excellent framework presented at

the Summit. The trainings have been in such high demand that it has been

video tapped by Human Resources for countywide distribution. I have also had

the recent privilege and honor of presenting this training on behalf of the ICMA

University at the Municipal Managers Association of Northern California

(MMANC). All my recent professional growth and leadership opportunities are

directly attributed to my Regional Summit attendance.

I highly recommend the Regional Summit and all the network and professional

development opportunities associated with it.”

Jesse Salinas, Yolo County

"The EPLI is a great way to step back and refresh from the

day-to-day grind with fellow emerging leaders in local

government management. The EPLI allowed me to make

lots of connections, refine my leadership skills and perhaps

most importantly remind me why I love this profession.”

If you need to change some words/wording to make it work

better or flow better for your purposes please feel free to do

so."

Martin Shanks, Assistant City Administrator & Director of

Community Development, City of Monroe, WI

"I have told many of my early career college about

EPLI as a wonderful personal development tool and

networking opportunity. In contrast to the large and

at times overwhelming conference, the EPLI is a

great was to connect with others in the field,

exchange information and bond over many of the

same experiences. The technical aspect was very

valuable and gave real-world training that could

compliment my MPA."

Rebecca Likiardopoulos, Management Assistant,

City of Derby

"The Emerging Professionals Leadership Institute

provided a unique opportunity for me to meet ICMA

leaders and learn about how other communities are

addressing pressing issues and future trends. EPLI

helped me focus on my career goals and take a few

steps in the right direction. The cost-benefit ratio for

EPLI is a tipped scale—I had a great time and learned

a lot for a very reasonable price. I would recommend

attending EPLI to anyone considering a career in

local government management.”

Dallin Kimble, Management Analyst, Town of

Ashland

"The best thing I learned at the recent Emerging

Professionals Leadership Institute that I attended

was that no matter how well I think I know my

leadership style, there is always more to learn and

new ways to use those skills to better prepare my

team for lasting change.”

Amanda Mack, City Administrator, City of

Worthing

"I would recommend EPLI for any emerging leader in

local government as it not only provides you with

learning opportunities, but a chance to network with

other members in your region as well as ICMA

leadership. I will continue to use the information I

learned from the program for years to come!”

Kathleen Walpole, Management Analyst, Clark

County, NV

"I enjoy attending the regional summits. They have

all the quality of the annual conference, but are

smaller in size, and more intimate. I enjoy seeing all

of my colleagues from the area; and I always come

back home refreshed and invigorated to achieve

great public service.”

Margaret Norris, Municipal Management

Consultant, University of Tennessee
