Mining at Avenue Station Overview:

• Mining at Secondary Entrance to begin late October/early November 2017

• Mining at Main Entrance to begin in early 2018

• Mining operations are included in the 2010 Toronto Transit Project Noise By-Law Exemption to allow for tunneling and related work to occur 24 hours a day.

• Three primary underground activities

• Each underground activity must be supported by activities at surface

• Minimal noise or vibration from underground activities

• Noise can be expected from required surface activities

Noise Reduction Plan

• Implement noise reduction measures at the station construction sites

• Continually monitor noise and vibration throughout construction

• Adjust noise reduction measures at the construction sites as required

• If necessary, consider additional measures for residences in potentially sensitive zone

• Ensure proactive communications with the community before and during construction

The project has set a big precedent in Ontario for the assessment, mitigation, and

monitoring of construction noise and vibration which will have an ongoing benefit for all

future infrastructure/transit projects.

Construction Site Noise Reduction

• Install noise barrier walls

• Use enclosures to cover equipment like generators and pumps

• Use blankets and silencers to reduce noise from fans

• Delivery routes selected to minimize disruption on residential streets and to minimize backing up

• Replace beeping back-up alarms with broadband

• Install GPS tracking to monitor delivery routes

• Minimize night time deliveries

• Use rubber mats in truck beds and loading areas

• Use grid power instead of generators where possible

• Use soft wheels and quieter motors for cranes

• Good neighbour training for subcontractors and CTS employees

• Proactive machine inspection and maintenance

• Continuous monitoring for improvements

Resident Based Response Plan

Resident Based Strategy

• One on One visits with each property in potential ‘sensitive zone’ to explain work,

existing mitigation, ask them to reach out to us if they have complaints (in addition to

general communications for wider neighbourhood)

• Conditions for determining the ‘sensitive zone’ have been determined based on major

international projects such as the Boston Big Dig, Crossrail in London, and the Thames

Tideway Tunnel.

• Existing community feedback channels will be used to support the Resident Response

Process in the following ways:

Resident Response Process

• Resident contacts CTS with overnight noise concern (11pm to 7am)

• CTS responds within 24 hours

• CTS investigates noise issue

• If warranted, within 24 hours of the home visit, CTS offers resident appropriate noise

reduction measure based on specific characteristics of the home

• CTS keeps in touch with resident and follows up within 2 weeks of measure being

activated to confirm effectiveness

Residential Noise Reduction Measures

• Noise reduction measures will either mask noise, reduce noise transfer or improve

indoor air circulation to allow windows to remain closed.

• Measures could provide 20 to 30 dB further reduction compared to indoor sound

levels if the windows left open (sound levels one quarter to one eighth as loud).

• This represents a more than 25 to 40 dB noise reduction potential as compared to

outdoor sound levels (a fifth to a sixteenth as loud).

• Selection and effectiveness of measures will depend on the specific characteristics

of each residence.

• Noise reduction measures are also effective during the day for an overall added

benefit for those closest to the construction sites.

• Trenching works underway

• Wells on west side of Avenue Road to begin week of September 5th

• Centerline wells upcoming (on Eglinton, Braemar to Lascelles)

– Overnight work ideal to minimize local traffic impacts

Sewer Lining Update

• Preparatory work, delayed (originally scheduled for August 21 to September 1)

– Approved overnight work permit to be extended

– Public notice distributed locally

• Sewer bypass installation

– Mid-late September, approximately one week of work

– Overnight work required to minimize day-time traffic disruption to complete trenching work across Avenue for sewer bypass pipes

• Sewer Lining

– October (3 weeks of work), approximately 3 days of work per section

– On Eglinton Ave from Braemar to Lascelles, and small section on Avenue Road, Oriole Pwky and Highbourne

– Overnight work required to avoid sewer/water service disruption to businesses and residences during daytime hours

– Notice to be distributed locally

Watermain Lining

• September/October

• Temporary Water Connections for Watermain lining (150mm main)

– Activity will take approximately 2 weeks

– Eglinton Ave from Avenue to Oriole, Oriole from Avenue to laneway and laneway

– Temporary water disruptions for switching of service connections to temporary water supply

• Installation of water valve on 300mm watermain

– Activity will take approximately 1 week of work

– Sidewalk in front of 259 Eglinton Ave

• Overnight work required for valve installation and switching of services to avoid water service disruption to businesses and residences during daytime hours

Tunnel Backfilling

• Prior to mining works, CTS must fill portions of the tunnels with concrete

• This involves drilling from the surface all the way to the TBM tunnels

• Holes will be covered with steel plates until the concrete pour time

• Once the concrete pouring is complete the holes will be filled and restored

• Work areas located in the following areas:– Area A: 2 holes drilled in the eastbound curb lane, just west of Avenue R.

– Area B: 2 holes drilled in the eastbound curb lane, at Highbourne Rd and Eglinton Ave.

• Work will take approximately 2 months total– Crews will be set up in the area for approximately 1-2 weeks for the drilling

of the wells (work zone in place)

– Crews will return at a later date to complete the concrete pour over approximately 2 weeks (work zone only when pouring is underway)

• Commence installation of a 300mm sanitary sewer within the south station

• Commence diversions work for the existing combined sanitary sewer system

(overnight work) and installation of the new sanitary sewer infrastructure–

Chaplin Station: Current Construction Staging

Began August 30, 2017 for approximately eight (8) weeks

Proposed Overnight Wet Utilities Work

• Diversions of the existing combined sanitary sewer connections along Eglinton Ave W are

required while crews install the new sanitary sewer infrastructure.

• Diversion work involves cutting into the existing combined sanitary sewer and pumping the

waste water while the new infrastructure is installed.

• Rationale for overnight work:

– Performing when use of the sanitary system is lighter will expedite the activity

– Will minimize the public’s exposure to odor of sewage when existing sanitary pipes are cut

– Reduces sewage flow will improve safety conditions for workers

• Equipment to be used overnight includes excavators, trucks, skid steers and site lighting

• Dates: Work will take place between mid-October and mid-January 2018, with

approximately 15 days of overnight work

• Hours: preparatory works (concrete removal, hydro-vacuuming, etc.) from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00

p.m.; diversion work (cutting pipes, excavation, hauling, etc.) from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
