INTRODUCTION• Organisation strategy, working processes, and software development need to be able to support a culture where innovation can flourish.• In this paper, we propose the fostering of innovation for heritage organisations through “two-speed IT” (Bossert, 2015);– foundational but ‘slow’–innovative but flexible and ‘fast’

TWO-SPEED IT•Bossert (2014) identifies four capabilities for successful (digital) service operators:–Adopting to changing customer expectations–Providing a seamless multichannel experience–Using big data and analytics to understand users–Automating operations and digitizing business processes
TWO-SPEED IT• Two-speed IT reconciles two modes in a digital product management model:– Support for software development practices of “testing, failing, learning, adapting, and iterating rapidly”– Separation of “experimental” development approaches from an operational context that includes critical back-end (legacy) systems
Slow• Standardized and off-the
shelf solutions• 24/7 service (systems for
managing storage, cataloguing, play-out, and ordering)
• Frequency of updating applications is measured in months or years rather than weeks
Fast• Tailor-made solutions• Caters to specific user
requirements• Do not have very stringent
requirement regarding stability and minimum “uptime”
TWO-SPEED IT & GLAMS
NETHERLANDS INSTITUTE FOR SOUND AND VISION •One of the largest audiovisual archives in Europe •70 percent of the Dutch audiovisual heritage •More than a million hours of television, radio, music and film (1,900,000 objects)
PUBLIC MISSIONNISV is a cultural-historical organization of national interest. It collects, preserves and opens the audiovisual heritage for as many users as possible: media professionals, education, science and the general public.
MUSEUM EXPERIENCE•Over 200,000 visitors per year• Interactive exhibits•Focus on media history and production•Temporary exhibits•Currently undergoing a renewal, focussing on multimedia, technology and user agency
DIGITAL ARCHIVE•15 petabytes of digitized and digital born audiovisual heritage•Annual ingest of another 1,5 petabytes– 8,000 hours of television– 54,000 hours of radio
IN CONCLUSION• We have learned a lot regarding two-speed IT and have found it to be a well-suited strategy for ensuring that the outcomes of research and innovation projects can find their way to production systems• With the experience gained over the past years, we look forward to implementing the new access strategy and further developing the two-speed IT model within our own organisation
