What is Private Sponsorship

The resettlement of a refugee to Canada, in which the financial costs of sponsorship and the settlement support is provided by private groups or organizations.

Sponsoring groups must provide financial support and settlement assistance for a maximum of 12 months or until the refugee becomes self-sufficient within the 12 months.

Who Can Be Sponsored

Convention Refugee Abroad Class:

are outside their home country; and cannot return there

due well- founded fear of persecution based on race,

religion, nationality, membership in a particular social

group or political opinion

OR

Country of Asylum Class

are outside their home country and have been, and

continue to be, seriously and personally affected by civil

war or armed conflict, or have suffered massive

violations of human rights.5

Who Can Be Sponsored

Must also pass:

• Security

• Criminality

• Medical

Who May Not Be Eligible

• People still in their country of birth

• People in certain countries

• Those who held certain military/government positions

• Those involved in direct conflict

Role of People in Canada

• Identifying people who need to be helped

• Providing information and documentation

• Becoming part of sponsoring group

• Settlement and support
