Collecting stories• Mariana is a mother of four and a Hayward resident. She lives with her

children, her husband, and her elderly mother-in-law. Her husband works in construction. His job is seasonal and sometimes he doesn’t get enough work hours to help make ends meet. Mariana’s family tries to stretch their income as much as possible, but find it is getting more difficult as the cost of living rises.

• “It was hard to believe that there was a program that could help me get food for my family. I was so thankful when I found out I was approved for benefits.”

• “It has been a great help to get CalFresh. I am able to buy food for my family and save a little bit of money to buy school materials and clothes for my children.”
