What Happened?

• The Netherlands donated public bicycles to Seoul MetropolitanGovernment on the occasion of the Prime Minister of theNetherlands Mark Rutte’s visit to Korea.

• The number of donated bicycles is 220.

• Donation was made based on the support of Dutch businesscommunity in Korea, which are Dutch corporations in Korea e.g.ING, Philips.

How and When?

• It was Embassy’s initiative to donate bicycles to SeoulMetropolitan Government for its use for Seoul Public Bike RentalSystem ‘Ddareungyi’.

• Donation ceremony took place on 28 September 2016 during thePrime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte’s visit to Korea, as asub-program of his visit to and meeting with the Mayor of SeoulMr. PARK,Won Soon.

• Manufacturing of 220 bicycles is currently in progress and will befinished in early December 2016. From that point on the bicycleswill be available for the citizens of Seoul.

Why Bicycles?

• Bicycle is a common point of interest that both the Netherlandsand the city of Seoul have.

• It represents the environment-friendly and sustainabledevelopment, a healthy lifestyle and green energy, which are thevalues the Netherlands consider highly important.

• Seoul Metropolitan Government has been trying to expand itspublic bike rental system with priority since its launch in 2015.

• It is a nice gesture to support Seoul’s idea to make the citygreener and to improve the life quality of the citizens of Seoul. Atthe same time, it is a great Holland Branding opportunity to reachout the broader public as the eco-friendly and green country.
