Protected Bike Lanesin the City of Portland
Oregon Active Transportation Summit 2016
Lewis Wardrip PE
Portland currently has 2.5 miles of protected bike lanes. We are currently in design for another 1.4 miles.
• SW Broadway (striping)• NE Cully (road reconstruct)• SW Multnomah Blvd (road reconstruct)• NE Multnomah St (striping and planters)• SW Moody Ave (road reconstruct)• Future NE 47th Ave (road reconstruct)
SW Broadway – Clay St to Jackson St1/3 Mile 13,000 ADT 1-way 3 to 2 lanes

NE Cully Blvd – Prescott to EmersonApproximately ½ mile 4600 ADT
Complete road rebuild
6’ sidewalk, 4’ planter, 8.5’ cycle track
Protected Bikeway Cross Section
Cycle track is higher than the roadway and lower than the sidewalk.
• A mountable curb delineates the bike zone from the parking zone
• Sidewalk curb allows for street sweeping of cycle track
• Removes responsibility from adjacent property owner to maintain cycle track.
Basic design elements
Left turns out of travel laneCurb extension / possible swale
Grade-separated bikeway

• Challenging design for storm water• White striping has no contrast on fresh (white)
concrete• No parking upstream of driveways and
intersections because of right turns
SW Multnomah Blvd 2300 block to 31st.4 Miles 19,000 ADT
SW Multnomah Before
SW Multmomah After
• Shared bike and pedestrian on south side is frustrating for some users
• The parking area needs to be well marked or drivers will park in the bike lane

• Planters occasionally move• Sweeping is difficult• Painting a buffer between the stripes caused
some confusion and required a lot of maintenance

Contrast pavement marking
• Each mode needs its own surface material• Pedestrians want to be and should be at the
back of the sidewalk

The Future• Directive to always strive to provide protected
bike lanes• In a physically and monetarily constrained
environment providing protected bike lanes can be challenging
• Our experience - protected bike lane design requires creativity
