! Systematic generation and compilation of food composition data in ASEAN have been carried out for several decades" efforts of individual countries to meet the needs of

food and nutrition activities! Further impetus were provided with the establishment

of International Network of Food Data Systems (INFOODS) by FAO in 1984" a worldwide network to improve the quality,

availability, reliability and use of food composition data

! INFOODS is organized into several regional data centres" including ASEANFOODS

! Attended by key personnel carrying out generation and

compilation of food composition data in Indonesia,

Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam

" focused on developing a system for quality

evaluation of FCT/FCDB

! System was based on 12 criteria and several sub-

criteria

! Used to evaluate 8 existing FCT/FCDs from 5 countries

! Based on the evaluation, challenges and issues within

each country and across the countries which

participated were identified

! There was a general consensus that the nutrients

covered in the FCTs was a major limitation14

! Participants also selected and prioritized the list of nutrients which are commended to be included in the national FCDB

! In cognizance of the current health problems and issues, there was general consensus that data for the following priority nutrients are needed" fatty acids (saturated, polyunsaturated,

monounsaturated) and total sugars

Concluding remarks –

future of work on food composition data in ASEAN

! A great deal remains to be done to improve and expand the food composition data in ASEAN

! Some countries have yet to establish a FCD programme, " existing FCTs/FCDBs have large data gaps

! A long term programme for generation and compilation of quality FCD should be established in each country" Various challenges exist, including lack of adequate

funding! ASEANFOODS should continue to play an important role

as a coordinating network! to provide technical support and enable sharing of
