Summer is nearly upon us, and the season brings with it a few changes when it comes to your vegetable garden as the weather gets warmer. Here’s a quick list of three tips to keep in mind when tending to your garden during the summer months.

First off, don’t be afraid to keep planting your off-season vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, green onions and radishes. By continually refreshing your garden with these plantings, you’ll end up with a longer harvest period that can carry well into late summer and even into the fall.

Gardening Tips It’s also important to keep adequate moisture levels in your

garden's soil during the summer. This helps keep things cooler down at the root level, as the constant evaporation of water provides a cooling effect. These cooler temperatures reduce the risk of mildew or mold, which means that frequent watering won’t have a negative impact on your plants.

Eggplant, peppers, and tomatoes can do well in the beginning of summer, provided they are given adequate protection from the harsh sun. This can usually be accomplished with a shade cloth, which will have the added benefit of cutting down evaporation. You’ll want to protect your potatoes as well, not allowing any sunlight to hit the tubers by hilling the foliage.
