  • 1. Sumatra Lintong Blue Batak So, why is this coffee called Blue Batak?

2. The Blue is the blue tint of the usually green unroasted coffee beans. Why? 3. Answer: The low levels of iron in the soil create that bluish color. 4. So, why Batak? The Batak people have tribal origins in Northern Sumatra throughout the last 2500 years. In the 1400's, several explorers wrote about (from a comfortable distance) the cannibalistic practices of the Batak. The Bataks were fierce warriors who would eat the hearts, palms, soles of the feet, and blood of their fallen enemies. They were known to eat their parents when they became too old. Crime was probably low because they also ate criminals, mostly raw and they would add lime, salt, and sometimes a little rice. 5. I wonder... I wonder if there is a relationship between the low levels of iron in the soil and the desire of the Batak people to eat the iron-rich hearts of their enemies. Which Batak tribal member first said, Eat your heart out? No, that phrase probably did not come from a humorous cannibal. 6.
