Introduction The objective of this primer is to provide the reader with an understanding of how an Indian restaurant chain used Nimble's temperature monitoring solution to reduce food wastage due to the failure of walk-in cooler.
Restaurant Temperature Monitoring – The Problem A leading restaurant chain in India with over 70+ outlets had an issue with their walk-in coolers. Due to frequent voltage fluctuations during Indian summers, the cooler's compressor fails quite often. When the cooler temperature failure is identified, the store admin would call the company's support team who will send a technician to fix the issue. On an average, the whole process of identifying the failure and attending the issue takes about 5 – 6 hours. If the situation goes unnoticed during a busy day or at night, good amount of food gets spoilt. To be safe, they had to dispose of all the food in the cooler and restrict restaurant service until the cooler was fixed and restocked. In this way, the company was losing nearly 20% of food during summer months.
The company wanted a solution that can alert their managers automatically when there is temperature failure. They wanted a reliable and automated wireless temperature monitoring solution that helps them reduce wastage and also increase their ROI, in the long run.

The Solution Nimble Wireless provided an end-to-end temperature monitoring solution to help the company reduce food wastage. Every walk-in cooler was fitted with a remote temperature monitoring device that would wirelessly communicate with a cellular gateway placed inside the store. The device will collect temperature data every 15 minutes and forward them to the mobile gateway. All the data is then forwarded through a cellular network to the IRIS cloud application.
The IRIS cloud application aggregates the data collected from all the stores and displays it on a remote dashboard. The managers were given a secure login to access the dashboard. Using the dashboard, the managers can have a bird's eye on all the freezers across different stores. Notifications were setup to alert their staff if any door is not fully shut or if temperature readings are above their limit, allowing them to respond appropriately. The admin can now act swiftly and change the freezer or move the stored ice creams to a different freezer. This way the company reduced its wastage from 20% to about 5% in summer.
Cost Savings For an initial investment of less than Rs. 40,000 ($550), the customer was able to deploy a comprehensive solution addressing all of their needs. Each walk-in refrigerator/freezer (one in each outlet) that the company is monitoring contains upwards of Rs. 1,200,000 (~$20,000) worth of food product.
Within the first month, there was an incident where a cooler door was not shut completely at the end of a shift, and another incident when the cooler compressor went out of order, which could have resulted in several thousands of dollars in spoiled inventory. Both the incidents were averted in time, and food spoilage was reduced drastically.
