The Time Has Finally Come!• In groups that you all began working on before the end of last semester,
your goal was to think of a potential problem area in the UMBC community and begin to come up with questions that could provide solutions to those problems.• Your task was to brainstorm questions to apply to your research.• On Friday, February 12th during our First Year Council Meeting, you are
going to present your findings to your peers as well as a few special guests.• After you all have presented, you will receive feedback from the guests and then
you will vote on which problem you’d like to find a solution for, for the rest of the school year.
Your ResearchSince we lost a few meetings during the
end of last semester and the beginning of this one, you guys will have 11 days to
come up with research and format a nice presentation.
Your Presentation• You are going to present your research during your groups presentation. Things you
should include are:• Who you asked (demographics)• Sample questions • Select participant responses• Conclusions• Why your peers should vote for your group• Anything else you’d like to add.
Your presentation should be captivating, well thought out and informative.
Your Presentation cont’d.• Presentations will be 6 minutes, maximum.• If you need any supplies, let me know and I’ll see if I can help you out.• Consider the criteria that we established earlier in the year because your
presentation will be put through it.• You will have time to work on the presentation during this week’s
meeting.• Don’t be scared! I know you all don’t have a lot of time to prepare but
just relax, you’re going to do fine.
Your Groups• A few people could no longer be part of FYC or they have a class during
that time so we had to switch around the groups a little bit. They are as follows:• Commuter Engagement: Ilzat, Gerardo, Jay*• Dining Hall/Food: Boebin, Sidney, Miranda*• The RAC: Chien, Katie, Natalie*• Campus Life: Callie, Collin, Jewel, Myles
* = still in FYC, can’t make the meetings
The next slides contain notes I had from the last meeting, please read them!
Commuter Engagement• most are unaware of resources, advertise in more
places• they have no storage space, maybe store things in
Commons/UC?• transportation: casual carpooling doesn't really
work, lack of parking spaces, not much knowledge about MTA & transit
• socialization (especially with other commuters): commuter social/mixer event, email list by county?
Are you sure that most of the commuters are unaware of their resources and events going on at campus? I would suggest polling commuters on their feelings about transportation and storage and socialization.
Dining Hall/Food• Put surveys on tables to provide feedback• Changes: Menu available at the door, white board
with what is being served, push dining times back, meal swipes per dining period should be more flexible (you should have the option to choose which meal period you want to use when close to the cut off time), why is D Hall the only thing open on weekends?
• Better food quality, no more fried food, more nutritious items
• late night is better than regular d-hall.
Maybe find a better way to get feedback than putting surveys on tables - also are the critiques personal opinions or common beliefs throughout the student body? Talk to Kim Leisey - Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs about your proposed changes to D Hall before directly speaking to Chartwells.
The RAC• Main problems: people don't know when specialty classes are
happening, TVs aren't convenient for RAC purposes, machine maintenance is slow, people are uninformed about how to use the machines, not a lot of space for the amount of people at the gym.
• Create a poll to see when most people go to the gym and ask the RAC if we can put it on their page, or spread the results though e-mail.
• Ask RAC's manager about athletic room's policies• Find out when athlete weight room hours are• Ask about maintenance schedules• Ask about TV policies
Run a survey and ask people who frequent and don’t frequent the RAC about whether they know when certain classes are happening. Speak to someone at the RAC who would be able to tell you when most people are in the RAC. Additionally ask about use of athlete weight room; I’m not sure that much can be done about that but you never know.
Campus Life• Contact Student Life: Ask about current
student involvement statistics, what are their involvement solutions, info on participation from student orgs
• Survey Questions: How involved are you on campus?, Do you feel like an active member of the community?, Are you a part of any student org? Why or why not?, Would you want to be part of an org? Have you ever attended Involvement Fest? How many campus events do you attend monthly? General advertising questions.
Speak to Romy Hubler about Student Life questions. The survey questions are great! Start putting together a list of questions.
