Part-4
• We discussed about cultivation of “Kalnamak rice” in previous
presentation .In the same rainy season we also cultivated other
paddy varieties like ”MapillaiSamba, MutrinaSannam and
Thanga Samba”.
• We got limited amount of these paddy seeds from Sri Sarada
Peetam, Ulunthurpet .
• Lets have a brief discussion on their cultivation for seed
multiplication.

Mappillai samba:
•This is one of the rice varieties
which lost after the green
revolution.
• The name of this rice is based
on a instance. Earlier this rice
will be given to the bride groom
before the marriage to increase
his strength in order to lift the
stone (illavata kal) and prove his
ability to get married .so the rice
named.
• This rice is said to improve
digestion, cure mouth ulcers and
control diabetics.

Mutrina sannam rice:
•This is a long grain traditional
rice of Karnataka.
•The crop grows more than five
feet tall.
•This rice is well suited for
south Indian meals.
•The crop age is 150 days

Thanga samba:
• The word ‘Thangam’ in Tamil
means 'Gold'. Since the matured
grains are golden in color the
variety is known as 'Thanga
Samba'.
•The ear head of this variety is
very long.
•This variety of rice is extremely
fine and long
•It is used for the preparation of
special dishes like pulav. It is
suitable for the South Indian meal.
•Late samba and samba period is
the best season.
•Crop duration is 160-165 days
where 40 days in nursery.

Stem borer disease was found in “Mutrinasannam” but other
varieties were resistant to it

We noticed the “ThangaSamba”crop being affected by leaf spot
disease and losing its growth but other crops were resistant to it.

We added leaves of milk cactus to the fermentation tank and sprayed
the 10 days fermented solution to the crop
Two weeks after spraying fermented milk cactus solution
the cop get rid of the leaf spot disease and grew healthy

The grains got matured and the panicles were
bent by grain weight by 120 days

The paddy got matured and dry at 140 days and was ready for harvest

The harvested paddy was transported to other place for threshing

The harvested paddy got threshed by tractor for grain separation

Grains were separated from straw and were cleaned by
manual wind separation method.

Conclusion:
In this cultivation we got required quantity of seeds of above
said three varieties.
We also came to know about each crops nature to be prone to
some diseases and immune to another.
We successfully found the solution to overcome the pest and
diseases attacking different crops .
We suspect the inclusion of cow hide manure may be the
cause of stem worm attack and thinking of replacing it with
Vermi-compost.
We pray for almightiest mercy in form of sufficient rain in the
coming years to do farming full fledgedly.
