Branch reportsAustriaSimilar to previous years, the first meeting ofthe Austrian poultry sector took place early inJanuary during the ecosocial forum in a smallvillage in the southeast of the country. Thisannual meeting is supposed to linkagriculture and veterinary medicine resultingin a high number of participants from allsectors, especially farmers. Animal welfareand economic issues were the most importantissues. A single talk about campylobacterconcluded the meeting.

A special event was once again the meetingof the Association to promote Research inPoultry Science (VAG), which was held inApril and organised as a two-day meetingoutside Vienna at Lake Neusiedl.

Parasitic diseases were selected as thegeneral topic of the event. The firstpresentation was given by D. Liebhart fromthe Poultry Clinic at the Veterinary Universityin Vienna who gave an overview aboutimportant parasitic diseases in poultry.

This subject was further highlighted by twopractitioners, A. Hemme from Germany andP. Mitsch, who talked about parasitic diseasesin layers, broilers and broiler breeders. Thesubject was concluded by S. Spiess from MSDGermany who outlined recent progress inlicensing a new anti-parasitic product.

In the afternoon a wine tasting wasextensively used to deepen individual

subjects and inthe evening adinner was heldwhich featuredlocal delicacies. The night ended, for variousparticipants, atthe hotel barleading tocertain sideeffects the nextday!

The secondday focused ongut health and

started off with M. Hess who gave anoverview on infectious agents with relevancefor gut health in turkeys. The benefit andpractical application of competitive exclusionwas highlighted by C. Schneitz from OrionPharma, Finland.

The session was concluded by J. D. van Klisfrom Delacon Biotechnik, Austria, who

Members of the AustrianPoultry Association in frontof the castle in Eisenstadt, following the wine tasting.

focused on intestinal health problems inmeat-type poultry and the options ofnutritional interventions.

In June, another meeting of the Austrianpoultry veterinarians will take place adjacentto the 250th anniversary of the University ofVeterinary Medicine in Vienna.

Beside early sex determination in ovo, themeeting will concentrate on viral diseases, especially infectious bronchitis andadenoviral gizzard erosion.

BelgiumThe Belgian branch of WVPA organised fournational symposia in 2014. Each of these wasattended by 40-60 veterinarians active in thepoultry health sector.

On January 23rd we organised a symposiumon the use of antibiotics in poultry. This wasin close collaboration with AMCRA.

AMCRA is a centre of expertise, nationaljoint initiative of government, poultrybusiness, pharma industry and academia, aiming at collecting and spreadinginformation on the proper use of antibioticsand taking initiatives for the reduction ofusage in animal production.

A major part of the symposium was devotedto reporting and discussing previous andforthcoming initiatives of AMCRA.

In addition, Dr Katie Vermeersch from theFederal Agency for the Safety of the FoodChain reported on the present status ofantibiotic resistance in bacterial isolates fromfarm animals at national and European level. All in all, the conclusion of this meeting waspositive, as there is a spectacular negativetrend in antibiotic use in farm animals ingeneral and in poultry in particular inBelgium.

On April 23rd, another hot topic withrespect to poultry health was tackled, namelyhow to control dermanyssus in layers. On thisoccasion, Prof. Luc Thiry from GhentUniversity reported on the results of anational scientific research project aimed atthe development of an integrated controlstrategy for dermanyssus. The idea was topermanently reduce populations of thesenoxious organisms below an economically

acceptable threshold using a combination ofmethods, including a minimum of chemicalcompounds. He envisaged heat treatment ofthe layer house after depopulation, adaptations to the housing system so as tominimise hiding places, silica, plant extracts, traps, entomophagic fungi and finally, predator mites. At this same symposium, DrAlasdair Nisbet from Moredun Research,Scotland, reported on the development of arevolutionary new vaccine against red mites.Research on delivery systems for the vaccineis in progress.

On June 19th, a symposium was devotedentirely to alternatives to antibiotics for use inpoultry. The first speaker was Dr WimNuboer from Micreos, a Dutch companyspecialising in phage application in animalhusbandry, giving an overview of the past, present and future of phage therapy.

The second speaker was Dr LeenTimbermont from Ghent University, giving anoverview on the use of bacteriocines asalternatives to antibiotics. The third speakerwas Dr Hilde Van Meirhaeghe fromVetworks, a poultry health service andconsultancy company. She reported on the useof short chain and medium chain fatty acidsas alternatives to antibiotics, with emphasison practical experience. Finally, theundersigned gave an overview on the use ofprebiotics and probiotics.

In all of these presentations, emphasis wasclearly on applications for the control ofintestinal health and zoonoses, especially inbroilers, as these appear to be the two areasmost critical to poultry production at present.

The last symposium of 2014 was devotedentirely to the present situation regardinginfectious bronchitis in Europe. Dr Jane Cook, now consultant microbiologist fromHuntingdon, UK, gave an interesting talk onpractical aspects of how to control IB variants.Dr Mieke Steensel for the Central VeterinaryInstitute (CODA) in Brussels reported on theCOST action (FA1207) for coordinated controlof avian coronaviruses in Europe. Finally, DrSjaak De Wit from GD Deventer, TheNetherlands, gave a very in depth talk aboutpathogenicity and tropism of IB strainsworldwide, focusing on molecular analyses ofgenetic variation that underscore the diverseclinical manifestations of this viral disease.

Poultry health course onlineFollowing over 40 years of successful deliveryas a face-to-face course by the UK’s leadingexperts in poultry health, microbiology andvirology, the Poultry Health Course, whichhas been running at The Institute for AnimalHealth, Compton Laboratory for the last 20years, is entering a new phase ofdevelopment.

Compton, and now the IAH PirbrightLaboratory (now Pirbright Institute), haveentered into partnership with the Universityof Nottingham to develop an entirely onlineversion of the poultry health course. Thiscourse contains the same learning outcomesand content as the residential course, isdelivered by the same leading experts, andfeatures a series of interactive tutorials to helpreinforce students’ learning.

The partnership has been able to utilisefunding from the AgriFood AdvancedTraining Partnership grant provided by UKBiotechnology and Biological SciencesResearch Council (BBSRC) for thedevelopment of post-graduate trainingcourses for AgriFood sectors.

The original Poultry Health Course was andremains a residential course involving a seriesof more than 38 lectures presented by 29international experts in their own fields, overa two week period. The course typicallycomprises lectures on major non-infectiousand infectious diseases and the associatedpathogens together with problems inproduction and in individual sectors andapproaches to disease control. In addition, practical tuition is provided in laboratorytechniques, post-mortem analysis andvaccination equipment.

The course has been designed to meet theneeds of veterinary surgeons and poultry, feed and pharmaceutical professionals whowill lead the poultry industry in the future.

Most delegates hail from the UK but theworld of poultry medicine and science isbecoming increasingly a global enterprisewith centres of production moving towardsAsia and South America. There is thuspotentially huge scope for wideninginternational participation and discussion inthe course through its translation to an onlineformat.

Students can elect to study the course eitherthrough the residential or online pathway. The residential course will be held in springas usual in all probability during the monthof April in 2016.

The online course will be rolled out for the

first time in early October 2015. Lectures willbe released sequentially over an eight monthperiod until May 2016.

The course can be attended as a part ofcontinuing professional development (CPD)course with delegates receiving a certificate ofattendance. Students can also opt to sit anexam which will allow entry into a series ofadditional courses including poultryproduction, poultry business managementand poultry nutrition, leading to aPostgraduate Certificate in Poultry Healthand Production

Further information on the content anddelivery of both courses and the subjectspecialists involved can be obtained at thefollowing website:www.poultryhealthcourse.com

On their recent visit to South Africa to beupdated on the Cape Town Congress, the two vice presidents of the WVPA

met a well known president.

Frank T. W. JordanProfessor Frank Jordan BSc, PhD, DSc,DPMP, FRCVS, the eminent poultryveterinarian and academic, died on 9thJanuary 2015 at the age of 97.

Frank was born in Newport inMonmouthshire, South Wales in 1917and was always proud of his Welshheritage.

Frank qualified in 1941 at the RoyalVeterinary College, London with a BSc

in Veterinary Science and Membership of theRoyal College of Veterinary Surgeons(MRCVS). He spent his final twoundergraduate years in Berkshire, havingbeen evacuated due to the London Blitz.

There were few jobs in veterinary practiceavailable then, but Frank worked as a farmlabourer for a few months until he foundemployment in a mixed practice in York. Herehe gained useful experience but soonvolunteered for military service and became aCaptain in the Royal Army Veterinary Corpswhich took him to Burma.

After his war service, and teaching briefly atthe Royal Veterinary College, Frank workedin a mixed practice until 1949 when hebecame an Assistant Veterinary InvestigationOfficer at MAFF Aberystwyth. Here hebecame particularly interested in poultrydiseases but somewhat frustrated at not beingable to follow-up investigations to define thecauses.

After joining the University of LiverpoolVeterinary School in 1952 as a lecturer, he wasable to initiate his research at LeahurstCampus. Frank was awarded his PhD(London) in 1954 and became a Fellow of theRoyal College of Veterinary Surgeons(FRCVS) in 1955. Later in his career he wasalso awarded his DSc (London, 1970) and, after helping to establish the Royal College ofVeterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Diploma inPoultry Medicine and Production asChairman of the RCVS Poultry SpecialisationBoard (1987), he was among its firstrecipients. This was followed by two yearsserving as Chairman of its examinationssubcommittee.

In the early days at Liverpool, Frank wasone of the few academics at the time whoconsidered poultry diseases to be worthy ofstudy and research. Alone, he obtainedfunding from the then Agricultural ResearchCouncil and the British Egg Marketing Boardto establish at Leahurst a dedicated research

laboratory building, animal house facilitiesand a team of research staff. The research unitopened in 1966 and, following his officialretirement in 1985, the laboratory buildingwas renamed the Jordan Building. The workof this initially small group comprisedresearch on poultry diseases and lecturing onthese topics to veterinary undergraduates.

In 1973, a one-year taught MVSc course inAvian Medicine was established by Frank totrain veterinarians from all over the world inpoultry diseases and it ran for 11 years. Thecourse also proved to be an excellentrecruiting ground for PhD researchcandidates.

Frank’s main research interests were inpoultry respiratory diseases and he focusedinitially on infectious laryngotracheitis andthen mycoplasmosis and other agentsinvolved in chronic respiratory disease.Together with his colleagues, the researchoutput of the group numbered more than 500publications and put the University on theworld map in terms of poultry diseaseresearch.

Frank delivered numerous invited talks atprestigious conferences in many differentcountries. He also undertook study leave andadvisory work in various countries and wasin the USA in 1963 at the time when PresidentJohn F Kennedy was assassinated and in 1984he was helping PhD students in Tripoli whenthe UK severed diplomatic relations withLibya. He certainly had his share ofadventures!

Frank was an inspiring teacher, neverhappier than being with students in a chickenhouse, sniffing the atmosphere for ammoniaor delving in carcases in the post-mortemroom pointing out a swollen bursa or necroticenteritis. He also gave lectures on poultrydiseases, by invitation, to students at Bristol,Glasgow and Edinburgh Veterinary Schoolsand at the Institute for Animal Health,Compton.

He edited several editions of the classic textPoultry Diseases which enhanced hisinternational fame. The book has been usedas a standard all over the world wherestudents learn about poultry.

Frank still found time to be President of theBritish Veterinary Poultry Association,President of the Association of VeterinaryTeachers and Research Workers and amember of several University andGovernment committees and visiting groups. He held office in the International

Organisation for Mycoplasmology andtravelled as an advisor on behalf of the WorldHealth Organisation.

Frank officially retired in 1985 and, ratherremarkably, was co-author on at least 18publications after retirement. He continued towork in the Jordan building at the LeahurstCampus until he was in his late eighties andwas highly regarded by both established andnewer poultry researchers as their guru. Hisfinal two papers were published when he was88 and 91 years of age.

In recognition of his achievements Frankwas elected an Honorary Life Member of theWorld Veterinary Poultry Association(WVPA) in 1983. He was awarded the GordonMemorial Trust Lecture and Medal in 1985 ‘inrecognition of distinguished contributions topoultry science’. In the same year he waselected as a Life Member of the BritishVeterinary Poultry Association and in 1995 hewas awarded the Poultry Industry Award forlifetime services to the poultry industry. In1993 he was appointed MBE in recognition ofhis ‘services to veterinary medicine’.
