iconicspecies:theAndeanbear

TheAndeanBeanofSouthAmericaisfoundfromVenezuelatoNorthern

Argentina.TheAndeanbearsarealsoknownasspectacledbearsdueto

theirringsofwhiteorlightfuraroundtheireyes.

AccordingtotheSanDiegoZoo,theringsaroundtheireyescanlooklike

eyeglasses,orspectacles,againsttherestoftheirdarkbrownfur.

SanDiegoZoo’swebsitestates,

“Thesemarkingsoftenextenddownthechest,givingeachbearaunique

appearanceandhelpingresearchersidentifyeachbearbyits“mugshot”.

Themarkingsalsogivethebearitsscientificname:Tremarctos ornatus,or

decoratedbear.“

InVenezuela,thisspecieshas2distinctranges.ThespectacledbearsinVenezuela

dependmainlyonhumidmountainforestsalongtheAndesCordillera.Whilethe

bearisnowexploringnewregions,itisalsofacingextinction.Thereareeffortsin

SouthAmericatoprotectthebearfromextinction.

“ThemosteffectivemeasurefortheconservationofAndeanbearsinBoliviaisthe

nationalsystemofprotectedareas,”WallacetoldMongabay Latam.”Althoughthe

huntingofAndeanbearsisrare,itusuallyrelatestotheconflictbetweenhumans

andwildlife,eitherbyanaffectationtotheirlivestockorcorncrops.”

EarthTouchNetwork wroteaboutthesurveyrevealingimpressivefindings.

“Accordingtothesurvey,thespeciesismuchmorecommonwithinthe

boundariesoftheUNESCOsite(andintheareassurroundingit)thanwe

thought.ResearchersfoundevidenceofAndeanbearsinmorethan95%of

the368-square-kilometreareastudied,whichincludestheentiretyofMachu

Picchu.Althoughitwaspreviouslyknownthatsomebearslivedwithinthe

studyrange,thesurveyrevealedanunexpectedlylargepopulation.”
