INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND Slums are generally areas that occupied by poor people Gilbert (2007) Originally slums were leisure activities pursued by upper middle-classes
touring through poor parts of London (Rolfes, 2009). Today slums are guided tourist tours through the poorer parts of the
global south (Ibid). Slum peripheries used to be disregarded as part of the township as being
dirty, unhealthy and crime-ridden (Gottsmann, 2010;Hampton,1998).
LITERATURE REVIEW Frenzel (2012: 118) poverty in slum tourism not an accidental practice. Exploitation of heritage sites and the suffering of others for pleasure
(Ashworth, 2004; Meschkank, 2011) Meschank (2011) the general negative attitudes towards slum tourism Ability to contribute both financial and non-financial benefits towards the
development of slums (Frenzel, 2012). If slum tourism becomes a successful strategy, will it compromise its
existence? (Steinbrink, et al. 2012).
Goal and objectives
The goal of this research is to find out what the slum dwellers of Mamelodi think about slum tourism both as an activity and a development tool. From the goal mentioned above two research objectives were formulated:
To find out what the locals think about slum tourism. (Duarte, 2010) To find out what the locals think about tourism being used a tool for
development.
MAIN RESEARCH QUESTION
Can slum tourism be an effective tool in bringing the needed change in the slums of Mamelodi?
Sub research questions:
Do you think that slum tourism is bringing the needed socio-economic change to Mamelodi? (Stiglitz, 2002).
Do you think that slum dwellers actually benefit from slum tourism and what are the benefits? (Booyens, 2010).
Do you know of any slum dweller whose life was changed because of tourism and how it was changed? (Saarinen, Rogerson and Manwa, 2015)
RESEARCH POPULATION The sample comprise of 10 interviewees. Five males and five females youths from the slums of Mamelodi who have
lived there for at least more than 4 years. Only the youth who are South African by origin/birth will be interviewed. I chose these individuals because they are a bit literate and exposed to
tourism, make use of social media and I can relate to them on a personal level.
DATA COLLECTION This is a qualitative study. Data will be collected using semi-structured interviews. Non-probability sampling method will be used. Pre arranged interviews prior the actual interviews.
DATA ANALYSIS The interviews will be transcribed and assessed using the qualitative
content analysis as described by Mayring (2003).
Present, discuss and analyse data.
