What is Ruban?Rubanisation is a re-conceptualisation of human settlements in which the city and the countryside are considered as one space, not two as it is now - city and countryside are regarded as separate realms. Rubanisation stems from the belief that the continued consideration of the rural and the urban as two distinct realms is unsustainable in terms of social justice, cultural justice and environmental justice. This mode of thinking calls for a new spatial geometry of integrated development that offers real viable choices for living, one that is supported by environmentally sustainable technology and ethical lifestyle. In the present scenario in India, rubanisation can be the guiding philosophy for the vision of sustainable and livable smart city that should also incorporate ideas from traditional planning in India. We can call this vision as Smart & Ruban.
Whole System Design – Modular Approach
We consider the 3-acre campus of DaMonte Residency as a module for the Smart & Ruban area planning. In this we initially design for following components with an integrated approach:
1. Traffic & Transportation2. Water & Sanitation3. Renewable Energy & Conservation4. Localized Food5. Solid Waste Management6. Education7. Culture Hub8. Localized Livelihoods
On-demand Transport
“The day will come when the notion of car ownership becomes antiquated. If you live in a city, you don't need to own a car.”
– William Clay Ford Jr., Ford Chairman in 2000
Rather than individual house owning cars, they are offered an on-demand transport service where they can book seats or vehicles depending on their need and affordability.
MetroLITE – eco-friendly transport
• Demand-responsive Service : – Uses a Fleet of Eco-friendly Vehicle (EV) for Feeder Trips (<3kms.)
for Bus/MRT/ Carpool and for Short Trips (<8 kms.)– Develop a network of EV Stations at 0.5-1 km distance around the
city.
• EV-friendly routes connect inner residential areas to arterial routes (with congestion/emission charging for space-inefficient, polluting vehicles )and encourage more and more people to “avoid” cars for short trips/ single-driven/low occupancy trips.
• It facilitates “attractive” bus service, metro rail service as well as highly attractive personalized car sharing/pooling service.

MetroLITE
Innovative application of communication, location and computing technologies to planning and management of transportation- land use - energy system can transform our travel and living experience at affordable costs.
Water Management
• Reduce wastage • Ecological Sanitation – Significant reduction in
use of water in toilets• Grey water and rain water harvesting• Increase ground exposure to rain water for
widespread ground water recharging• Dig wells and ponds for potable water
EcoSan Toilets
Urine collected separately and used as fertiliserWash area water harvested
and used for watering plants
2 separate chambers for excreta collection. Each used for 10 months. By the time the second chamber fills up, first one is fully composted and evacuated.
Soil, Ash or Sawdust – sprinkled after each use to absorb moisture and aid decomposing.
Solar Power
• Cost of solar power has come down significantly.• Bulk purchase, installation and maintenance at Indirapuram
level will further reduce costs as well as make it easier to avail of government subsidies.
• Combined with energy conservation and energy efficiency measures, rooftop solar and wind power can completely replace the highly polluting diesel based power back-up.
Education initiatives
• Swaraj University, Shikshantar : To enhance the learning process among children, to make learning both appropriate and stimulating, career planning in accordance with the change in ground realities
• Samskrit Bharati: To facilitate learning of Sanskrit as spoken and written language and create a Sanskrit library in Indirapuram
• Veda Sansthan: To facilitate learning of Vedas and Upanishads for all age groups
• Talent based Skills
Village Studio - The Concept
A Village Studio brings together various facets of traditional village lifestyle such as food and fragrance, art and ambience, music and dance, technology and science – within an urban setting in a creative and innovative fashion.“Constraint and creativity are always connected. No artist paints on an infinite canvas. The artist understands that rather than just being limits, constraints can be freeing, especially when those constraints that have genuine meaning are recognized.” *
The Purpose
1. To provide an experience of soothing relaxation as an antidote to the stressful urban life
2. To rekindle people’s love and longing for the village life.
3. To create awareness for sustainable development and role of traditional science and technology and art and culture.
What does it offer
• The Village experience– Food & Fragrance – traditional dining experience
and organic food outlet – Health & Wellness - ayurvedic spa, beauty care– Music & Dance– Science & Technology
Sample concepts - Studios• Madhu Krishi• Butter making • Bread making • Dhenki – traditional rice milling• Chakki – traditional grinding• Solar cooking• Kolhu/sheller• Bamboo craft• Sangeet• Nritya• Akhada• Painting & sculpture
• Yagna• Bee-keeping• Vastu• Jyotish• Shastra• Library• Arogya• Saundarya• Kumbhkari• Bird Habitat• Water• Sanitation
Live, Work and Play Locally
• Travel (>5kms) should be for special purposes only.• In our holistic development plan, we shall develop
Indirapuram area as a knowledge and culture hub, where more than 60% of residents can work within a radius of 500 metres and 90% within a radius of 5kms.
• This will not only reduce travel time and ease traffic, this will significantly enhance the life-work balance and overall quality of life.
