The 2°C targets matter

‘Business as usual’ leads to an unacceptable rise in average global temperature.

“A 4°C world is so different from the current one that it comes with high uncertainty and new risks that threaten our ability to anticipate and plan for future adaptation needs.”

World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim, November 2012

CCS has a vital role to play in achieving CO2 emission targets

“We now need to shift to a higher gear in developing CCS into a true energy option, to be deployed at large scale. It is not enough to only see CCS in long term energy scenarios as a solution that happens some time in the distant future. Instead we must get to its true development right here and now .”

Maria van der Hoeven Executive Director IEAForeword to IEA CCS Technology Roadmap 2013

CCS communication – common complaints

It’s so complicated to explain and the language

is a nightmare!

There is a real lack of champions

CCS communication – common complaints

It’s so complicated to explain and the language

is a nightmare!

It’s way too expensive!

It’s only experimental technology

There is a real lack of champions

There is just nothing visually interesting

about it!

CCS communication – common complaints

It’s so complicated to explain and the language

is a nightmare!

There is such a lack of understanding: energy/ climate

change/ geoscience

It’s way too expensive!

It’s only experimental technology

There is a real lack of champions

There is just nothing visually interesting

about it!

22Images and experiment adapted from the CO2CRC ‘Chocolate CCS’

The CO2 trap...

CO2 is pumped into the tiny holes in POROUS, PERMEABLE rocks.

Above the porous/ permeable rock, there is non-porous rock that seals in the CO2

We call this CAP ROCK.

How does CO2 stay in the rock?
