Technology : Application of knowledge for practical purposes

Purpose of Green Technology is to

promote Sustainability

What is Green Technology?

Part 1

Page 3: Green technology

Meeting present needs of the society without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Curb the negative effects of human activity Global Warming

Sustainable development

Part 1

Page 4: Green technology

What causes global warming?

Global warming is largely the result of emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from human activities including industrial processes, fossil fuel combustion, and changes in land use, such as deforestation.

What do we see happening?

Melting away ice glaciers Less ice for the polar bears Drought in some countries High water and frequent storms

Advantages of solar PV Advantages Limitations

• Majority manufactured from Si - most abundant element in the earth’s crust (28% by weight)• Environment friendly• Decentralized installation• Long life (25 years)• Low maintenance• Noise-free• Clean• Light weight

• Intermittent power• Low-energy density (So far maximum commercial cell efficiency is 18%)• High start-up cost (declining)

Solar Thermal (Collector)

Solar collector converts incidence e-m radiation into heat energy.Solar water and space heating capacity upto 2009 is estimated as 180 gigawatts-thermal (GWth), leading by china (70%) [166 sq. km of solar collector]

Wind energy

Old wind-mills would lift water Today electricity is generated from

the wind It is free Wind power is available on land and

over the seaPart 2

Hydro power

In the early days water wheels where used for grinding

Hydro-power is from stored energy of water

Large lakes make reservoirs Turbines make electricity from water

Bio-fuel

Energy stored in wood, trees and plants can generate power

Bio-fuel is used for power generation Bio-fuel is used for alternative gasoline
