WORKSHOP ON GOOD STOVES AND BIOCHAR, BANGLADESH VENUE: ARAB TRAINING CENTER, BEUTHA, MANIKGONJ ORGANISED BY: BARCIK, BANGLADESH SUPPORTED BY: SIEMENPUU FOUNDATION, FINLAND A workshop was conducted on Good Stoves and Biochar in Bangladesh from 19th to 23rd December 2009. Organized by BARCIK, Bangladesh and supported by Siemenpuu Foundation, Finland. Dr. N. Sai Bhaskar Reddy, CEO, GEO , India has facilitated the workshop. This was attended by primary and secondary stakeholders from different parts in Bangladesh, including representatives from 8 NGOs and Government officials. On 19 th and 20 th field visits were conducted to understand the existing stoves in use and other local practices using ash and biochar by the communites. In this context, visited an urban slum near Buddhi Jeevi memorial on 19 th Afternoon and also a village near Manikgonj. On 21 st and 22 nd December the workshop was conducted. Demonstrated the making of good stoves and Biochar composting. Two households were selected in a habitation for demonstration of 4 Good Stoves (Magh-1 woodgas stove, Good Stove portable and two Good Stoves - two pot. Presentations were made using live case studies, photos and films on Good Stoves and Biochar using an LCD. On 23 rd discussed with Mr. Sen about the future plans of BARCIK regarding Good Stoves and Biochar initiatives. Resource material was prepared along with important weblinks and given to BARCIK.

The workshop activities were covered by two Private TV channels and telecasted on 23rd and 24th December 2009.

The Participants have very much liked the Magh-1 woodgas stoves, Good Stove portable and the Biochar composting methodology. They are very much willing to adopt these technologies using locally available material. Similarly the Government officials found them interesting and are willing to learn more through piloting as a research.
