The Committee’s Purpose

To bring together common interests of the community to develop a sustainability plan that carries forward a legacy of enjoying

the lake while supporting the natural environment for future generations to enjoy.

Purpose of a lake planning process

• Promote discussion and action with all community members

• Identify and protect specific lake values• Identify issues and impacts• Set a future vision for the lake

Community engagement is critical to ensure the lake sustainability plan reflects the interests and concerns of the broad community, not special interests

Water Quality

Monitor and assess water quality to determine lake health

• Enhance monitoring and identify sources of impairment

• Ensure water quality monitoring programs are adequate

• Report on changes in lake health

Reduce or eliminate sources of water quality impairment

• Promote awareness of threats to water quality through education

• Support stewardship programs aimed at reducing surface runoff and pollution

• Develop an awareness and education program on septic system care and maintenance

• Educate lake community on programs available for shoreline restoration

Impacts of Boating & Personal Watercrafts

Ensure our lake community is aware of the impacts of specific boating behaviors

• Share information and educate motor boat users how to minimize their impact on the lake

• Reduce impact on shoreline erosion and on wildlife

• Protect Lake from the introduction of invasive species

• Promote safe boating habits • Educate users on new low emission engine

technology • Gain an understanding for how many

motorized, and non-motorized boats are on the lake

Development Pressures

Ensure the Township Official Plans and Zoning Bylaws protect the long- term health of the lake

• Understand the Township of North Frontenac’s Official Plan and Zoning Bylaws

• Ensure shoreline buffer areas are protected during development

• Educate community regarding development pressures

• Ensure that any development plans are shared (including Green Energy initiatives)

• Stay current on Official Plan and Bylaws

• Raise awareness of the benefits local businesses provide to the community

• Educate seasonal residents about the available businesses and services

• Market "Buy Local" in the community

Understand wildlife in the area

• Collect data on wildlife in the area

Protect species at risk

• Encourage the protection of Species and Risk • Monitor loon population and nesting

Understand forestry in the area

• Encourage KLA community to review forestry management activities in the area

• Monitor aquatic vegetation within Kashwakamak Lake

• Encourage research into determining the factors contributing to growth of aquatic vegetation

• Promote stewardship and land use practices aimed at reducing excessive aquatic vegetation and algae growth
