Climate Change in Egypt

Egypt is a country where climate change is a very important factor.It affects every-day life, and is an issue that is a huge problem for the Egyptian government. A reason why Egypt has a big climate problem is population density. Egypt is actually not a dense country, with a measure of 83 people per km sq. Even though it is not densely populated, there are some really dense areas.

The reason for this is that the vast majority of all Egyptian people have mostly settled on the 5% of Egyptian land around the Nile. For example, Cairo’s population density is a whopping 31,700 people per square kilometer. Many of these people use cars and other public transport, which release a lot of CO2. It is regarded as one of the most polluted cities in the world. As a result of this, 2.1% percent of deaths in Cairo are from pollution.

Egypt is a country where anything that happens has an effect on everything else. If anything negative happens it will be very obvious throughout the nation as a whole.
What are the evidences of Climate change in Egypt? (INTRO)
As Mr. Abouleish has said in the video, the issue of the Mediterranean Sea level rise is one that is growing ever so slightly, rising at about 1 centimetre a year, give or take a few millimetres. Eventually, within the next few years, the sea will have risen about 1-2 metres, covering hundreds or thousands of acres of land, flooding villages, farmland, and many vital things in Egypt. Mr. El Dahan also talked about the sea level rise. He said that if the Mediterranean is even slightly higher than the Nile, then salt-water will overtake the Nile fresh-water. This could inundate Egypt with salty water instead of fresh water.

Again, as mentioned earlier, there are many impacts and evidences of climate change. It is obvious how warmer the Egyptian summer has become over the years, and how it is affecting our environment. There are still many other impacts other than the heat.

Since one of the effects is the sea level rise, the impact is that lots of land will be flooded. The impact of this could threaten Egypt’s livelihood, food security and GDP. Some estimate the Egyptian GDP could worsen by 20%.

The Egyptian government have been always active by attending climate summits. The most recent one was the New York Climate Summit in September 2014. Although Egypt is not the most active country fighting climate change, it still has many small initiatives across the nation.
What policies or actions have Egypt’s government made to deal with global warming or climate change? (INTRO)
As we said earlier and Mr. Abouleish repeated, Egypt has attended the yearly UN conferences on climate change for a while now. There is also no known national policy on preventing climate change. This is one reason why climate change is such a problem in the world today. Mr. El Dahan talked about an initiative the government have launched, where they buy extra solar power from people and use it for other purposes.

So, as Mr. Helmy said, the main way to help prevent global warming is to try to lower your CO2 footprint, which you can do with many simple things, such as conserving energy through fuel-efficient cars or avoiding the unnecessary use of cars or airplanes. You can also turn off lights when not in use.

Egypt in the future will be one of the nations that suffers the most from climate change. The sea level rise will affect Egyptians’ livelihood and their access to food. The government is trying very hard to work globally on climate change, but this can’t be done without the people of all nations. We must all work together to lower our CO2 footprints.
