Page 11: ( CL Project 1 : Experimental Landscape)

Historical Background First landscaped public park in the United States.

Wealthy merchants and landowners--admired the public

grounds of London and Paris.

Wanted New York to have a comparable facility.

After 3 years the state legislature authorized the City of New

York to use the power of eminent domain to acquire more

than 700 acres of land in the center of Manhattan.

Had to displace 1,600 residents.

Extension of the boundaries brought the park to its current

843 acres.

After a new city charter in 1870 restored the park to local

control, the mayor appointed park commissioners.

ReflectionThrough our research, we were able to identify and describe the characteristics of a metropolitan park and have a better

understanding of landscape features and elements in a park. The site visit to KLCC park helped us to have a better appreciation for the harmony and balance between the softscape and hardscape features of the landscape. Although both

the local and international case studies were both metropolitan parks, there were distinct differences between the two which shows that the conditions and context greatly impact the characteristics of a park. Finally, we have learned the value

of teamwork and how several people can contribute towards a final product.
