Tips for visiting Williamsburg & Manhattan

In this document you find tips for visiting NYC, based on my stay in NYC during the month September 2010.

As a Zeitgeist watcher and marketing strategist I stayed there for one month to see, feel, smell and taste the trends myself.

Where to stay?- Search a hotel or even better rent an apartment in Williamsburg or Greenpoint which is in Brooklyn.- Williamsburg is just 1 stop from First Av. in Manhattan, just take the L line.- Why Williamsburg? Because there is it happening. The young, cultural people, the so called Hipsters live in this area. And the atmosphere is very relaxed and vibrant. The best coffee and food you will find here. And you have a great view on Manhattan on the riverside.- For more info see freewilliamsburg.com

Where to drink or eat in Williamsburg?My Coffee favorites:- Van Leeuwen, 632 Manhattan Av.. I love their cappuccino- Blue Bottle Coffee, 160 Berry street. Here they roast there own coffee beans, just go and smell it. You will also see that drip coffee is back.- Bakeri, 150 Wythe avenue, sit in the nice small backyard- El Beit, 154 Bedford Av, with free Wifi and lots of hipsters- Milk & Roses, 1110 Manhattan Av. Wall of hardbound books and dark aged wood floors for an elegant atmosphere supported by an easy sound track of jazz.

Breakfast or lunch favorites:- Five Leaves, 18 Bedford Av, very nice place. Started by the great actor Heath Ledger (Brokeback mountain), but unfortunately he died before the opening.- Egg, 135 north, 5th street, is off course all about eggs dishes. There is always a queue. - El Beit, 154 Bedford Av, for great sandwiches- Café Colette, 79 Berry street, huge choice of sandwiches

Where to drink or eat in Williamsburg?My diner favorites:- Anella, 222 Franklin street. One of the best restaurants in Brooklyn.- Enid’s, 560 Manhattan Av. If you are alone you can eat at the bar.- Manhattan Inn, 632 Manhattan Av. with live piano music. Only a drink at the bar is also nice- Five Leaves, 18 Bedford Av. Great atmosphere and food. Trendy place. - Paulie Gee’s, 60 Greenpoint Av, for the best wood oven pizza’s. - Chai home Kitchen,124 North 6th street, really super Thai food- In Bushwick Brooklyn go to Roberta’s for superb brick oven pizza’s and more. They also crow their own vegetables on the roof.- The Brooklyn Ice Factory, for authentic ice creams

For cocktails and a beautiful place go to Hotel Delano, 82 Berry street

Things to do in Williamsburg?- The Meat Hook, 100 Frost street, is a butcher shop with local meats and very nice home made sausages and hot dogs. You can also take cooking lessons here at the Brooklyn kitchen.- Go in the evening to a Jazz café, like Rosa Live Music. I heard 8 youngsters play and it was really good- Visit Brooklyn denim, they are specialized in jeans made in the USA (local)- Bake your own mug or plate at Baked in Brooklyn, 242 Wythe Av. North 3 street.- Visit one of the rooftop farms, like on Eagle street, with the most beautiful view on Manhattan standing between the rabbits and leek.-The green market full off organic and local food on Saturdays-On a sunny day go the park at East river state park to have a view on Manhattan or go to McCarren Park and feel the sixties. Go to the sporting filed of McCarren Park and do some sports or just watch all those different cultures playing together. -Rent a bike and cross the Manhattan bridge and go back via the Brooklyn bridge-Take the subway to the Brooklyn Museum. Did you know the have a Mondrian chair and a wheelbarrow?-Walk around through Brooklyn Heights.

Where to drink or eat in Manhattan?Because I stayed in an apartment in Williamsburg I did not eat much in Manhattan.

My Coffee and tea favorites:- Argo Tea, where they treat tea like coffee. I had a Green tea Ginger twist. great sandwiches- No Starbucks, only for the free WiFi- Café Ost, 441 Eat 12th street, for the best coffee, it is a very nice cosy place- Barns & Noble at Union square- Ted & Honey in Brooklyn, - Suger Sweet sunshine in East village

Lunch and diner favorites:- Pastis in the trendy Meat packing district, Little west 12th street- Dishes, at Park Av, very popular with office workers- Go to one of the rooftop terraces, like the Peninsula Hotel or the Standard for a drink- Choose one of the foodtrucks in Midtown around 12.00, like Schnitzel & Things, Wafels & Dinges- For the best desserts go to Just Dessert

Things to do in Manhattan?- The best site to check for activities is, www.nymag.com or www.nycgo.com - Or go to Barnes&Noble, look for NYC guides and take the guides for reading at the Starbucks inside B&N.- Leave Manhattan on a sunny day and go to Jones Beach.- If you don’t like the beach rent a bike and cross Central Park or take the bike from Battery Park up to Harlem with the Hudson river near you - If you don’t like biking take a boat from South street Seaport for a tour around Manhattan Island- Otherwise just walk from Battery Park all the way up to 100th street, like I did.- Walk the High line park, a beautiful walk on the old subway track, at Gansevoort street. - Go to Chelsea indoor market with great shops. Nearby is a huge Apple store and the posh department store Jeffry, 449 West 14th street.- Visit the galleries in Chelsea.- Check at the Chelsea International Hostel, the Comedy Show for stand-up comedian- See the grandeur of the Grand Central Terminal-Take a guided tour at the United Nations- And off course go to a musical on Broadway

Things to do in Manhattan?Areas:- Lower Manhattan (Ground Zero and Wall street), Little Italy (fake and overruled by the Chinese), TriBeCa (walking around), Soho (popular shops), Meat packing (restaurants and designer shops), Lower eat side (upcoming), East Village (trendy), Greenwich village (gay), Chelsea (galleries), Hells kitchen (evening pleasure), Theater district (too busy), Upper east side (beautiful snob), Upper West side (rather boring), Central Park (lie in the grass and do nothing)

Museums:- MoMa, my favorite. See van Gogh and Matisse. Always good modern collections.- MET, is too big, but you should visit the roof terrace for a great view on central park.- Guggenheim, beautiful building- Cooper Hewitt (design)- The Frick collection
