Character: Lucy Smith

Lucy had long, probably backcombed, dyed brown hair. She is reasonably attractive, though wears too much make up. Wears fashionable clothing and is always attached to her ipod/phone.

Lucy likes drama at school. She enjoys going out with her friends on weekends. She is 16 years old and has been The Wanted on tour twice in the same year! Her favorite magazine is teenage magazines like Mizz and Smash Hits, her favourite music channel is smash hits and she’s also rather fond of JLS.

What will appeal to this audience?

Boyband members are generically attractive.

They appear shirtless, which the girls will appreciate.

Beach – reminds them of summer holidays and is a desirable location.

Female extras are similar to themselves, they would want to be them.

Basis of the video is having fun, and Lucy likes having fun!

Page 7: The wanted - Audience

Why will it appeal?Alternating between medium shots and close ups introduces all the members of the band and provides them all with equal screen time so your favorite will always be there!

Fast paced editing of partying and sunbathing shows the two sides to the ‘holiday’ and maybe the band, which would appeal to both sides of the girls personalities – exciting ad interesting.

Strobe lighting indicates the party atmosphere and their enjoyment.

During the day time shots and more intimate moments between band members and female extras slow motion editing is used on the footage, possibly to enhance the relaxation that the band are going through but may also contrast with the fast paced set of the night time party scenes.

In-between shots of ‘holiday’ quick medium shots are shown of the band singing, almost reminding the audience that they are watching a music video. Possibly implying that the female audience are lost in their world (see previous slide – basic diversion)

What does it offer the audience? (Uses and Gratification theory – Blumler, McQuial &

Brown) • Basic diversion through the world of The Wanted for 3 minutes, where

she can be immersed In their partying and holiday (exoticism compared to their everyday life).

• Personal relationships – Likely to be attracted to a particular member of the band and want to be romantically involved with them like the girls in the video. She could also talk about the band to other fans at gigs or online.

• Although she cannot really relate on a personal level to a member of the band, she could relate to the girls in the music videos, as she wants to be in their place, or to other fans who feel the same.

• The video is a reflection of todays boybands as well as information about how the band members would like to be seen – single, fun, attractive etc.
