FIRST ANNUAL WALDOS MUSIC FEST CELEBRATES THE ‘ROOTS’ OF 420

DENVER, Colo. — Native Roots Apothecary & Dixie Elixirs are thrilled to present THE 1ST ANNUAL WALDOS MUSIC FEST featuring MATISYAHU at The Fillmore Auditorium on Sunday, April 20th. Special guests Talib Kweli and Congo Sanchez will open the show. Show-time is 7:30 PM. Doors open at 7:00 PM (ages 18 and up with valid I.D.). Native Roots Apothecary and Dixie Elixirs are excited to launch this series of festivals in Colora-do to celebrate its first legal 4/20. The event will be celebrating the “growing” industry and show-case the new cannabis community. An event like this defines the social acceptance of cannabis in Colorado.

Owner of Native Roots Apothecary, Rhett Jordan (age 29), is a local entrepreneur and Colorado native. He has been heavily involved in the industry for many years having one of the biggest brands in cannabis.

Jordan said, “It is an honor to have amazing artists such as Matisyahu and Talib Kweli involved in this historic weekend. This is a great showcase of the positive nature of Colorado’s cannabis industry, which is a fast growing sector in the local economy.”

WHY ‘WALDOS’ – HOW APRIL 20th BECAME A RENOWNED HOLIDAY The Waldos were a group of young adults in California that had to hide their cannabis usage be-hind a wall (hence ‘Waldos’), so they gathered together – often at 4:20 pm – to smoke marijuana prior to it being legalized. This year’s 4/20 is an historic date which symbolizes our culture coming out from behind the wall. This is the culmination of an 80-year struggle for cannabis to transition from the black mar-ket to a socially acceptable pastime and medical standard. It has also become the inspiration for naming this evening of celebration and music as the 1st Annual Waldos Music Fest.

MATISYAHUWhen Matisyahu emerged in 2004 with his debut album, Shake Off the Dust ……. Arise, his musical persona seemed a novelty to some. Here was a Hasidic Jew -- dressed in a black suit with a broad-brimmed black hat worn over a yarmulke, and sporting a full, untrimmed beard -- who nevertheless performed toasting raps about the glories of traditional Judaism over reggae beats in a dancehall style directly from Jamaica. Moreover, he punctuated his performances with stage diving. It may have seemed like a joke at first, but Matisyahu was serious about his craft, and his diverse style soon garnered Grammy nominations, gold record certifications, and a broad audi-ence.

His second studio album – Youth - appeared in 2006 and was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Reggae Album. In late 2011, the singer posted a picture with a shaved head and payes cut with the caption, “No more Chassidic reggae superstar.” As such, his 2012 effort Spark Seeker was more secular pop. He is currently touring in Germany and his latest release – Akeda – will drop in June.

TALIB KWELIThe Brooklyn-based rapper earned his stripes as one of the most lyrically-gifted, socially aware and politically insightful rappers to emerge in the last 20 years. He travels around the globe as one of rap’s most in-demand performers.
