ANALYSIS OF THE HUNGER GAMES (OPENING 2 MINS)

THE HUNGER GAMES

The representation of class is shown the beginning scene of The Hunger Games. The film starts with a blank screen with writing telling the audience about the these games that children have to participate in. Then it cuts into

the next scene, in which two men sit in chairs in what looks like a TV interview. The two men are in fancy suits and their hairstyles are very

unusual , as one of the men has blue hair and the way it has been styled suggests that the film is set in the future , as the modern look that is usually seen in film is very different to this. The other man has brown hair that has been pushed back and he has a rather strange beard that has been shaped

around his face and it makes him look like a character out of a game such as Super Mario. This could suggest that they are upper class because their

clothing is very expensive and their hairstyles show that they have money.There is then a contrast as when it cuts into the next scene the location shows forests and wooded houses which instantly shows that there is a

difference between theses two settings and shows that this place is much more remote with no new technology. There is then a close-up on the

character’s face which shows her hair and in a simple ponytail . This could suggest a difference between these characters already. The camera then pans out to show Katniss comforting her little sister and from this you can see that

their clothing is very basic and the room looks very dark and gloomy. This gives the impression that they are from poor or working class background.

Representations

The film starts with a black screen with white text informing the audience what the movie is going to be about; it says “in penance for their uprising,

each district shall offer up a male and female between the ages of 12 and 18 at a public reaping”, this gives the audience a shock of what they are about to

watch as it involves the killing of innocent children, which may upset the audience. It then cuts to the next scene which shows two men talking about theses upcoming “games”; they look completely relaxed talking about these games where children are killed which makes the audience have sympathy

for these children who are to take part in the games. As the two men are talking they look very relaxed and chilled , which makes the atmosphere of

the movie seem very relaxed at this point .Then all of a sudden it cuts into the next scene where there it is in a wooded area surrounded by old looking houses , this gives the audience a shock as the scene has completely changed its setting and then we hear screams in

the background , along with birds humming. This implies to the audience that something is not right. After we the audience have seen the location it then cuts to the scene where Katniss is comforting her sister Prim , as she had a

nightmare that she would get chosen to compete in these games. This illustrates to the audience how scared and worried she was feeling and shows the difference between how the capitol see these games to how the people in

the district see the games.

Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister Prims place. Joined

by her district's male tribute, Peeta Mellark , Katniss travels to the Capitol to train for the Hunger Games under the guidance of former victor Haymitch

Abernathy.The Production company was Color force and it was distrusted by Lionsgate.

particularly the Diary of a whimpy kid and The Hunger Games series. In 2012, The Hunger Games grossed $155 million in the opening weekend. Its sequel, Catching Fire , grossed $158 million in the opening weekend making it the

highest grossing film by Color Force to date. The film company Lionsgate is a Canadian-American entertainment company. The company was formed in Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 3, 1997, and is headquartered in Santa Monica, Lionsgate has a home video library of more than 13,000 films with all of the former Artisan Entertainment releases including as Dirty Dancing, Earth Girls are Easy, Army of One, Total Recall, On Golden Pond, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire , Mockingjay part 1/2 .

INSTITUTIONS

The first scene of The hunger Games uses specific shots to show the emotions of the people effected by the hunger games. An example of this

is when an over the shoulder shot is used on the game maker of The Hunger Games when he was being interviewed. His facial expressions in

this shows that he isn't very bothered about the killing of innocent children , I know this as it his facial expressions are very relaxed and the

way he is positioned him self on the chair by crossing his legs an speaking in a calm casual voice.

There is then a contrast as when it cuts into the next scene and there is a wide shot of the district , sound is used as an effect to show the

emotions it has on people , as you can hear screams , this is used to foreshadow to future of what is going to happen. After the scream sounds it then cuts into the scene were a close up is used to show

Katniss is comforting her sister Prim , as she had a nightmare that she got selected to be in the games. This shows that the children of the

districts are terrified of being picked to participate in these games , it also shows that the capitol don’t really care about these children and

use fear and terror to keep them in line.
