Analysis of New Moon Teaser Trailer

The trailer begins with the camera tracking along the beach which has connotations of being peaceful and tranquil. This could show the normality of everything and perhaps it is showing the calm before the storm. The shot then fades to a car parking outside of a house, this is set at night making it seem more mysterious and sinister. The non diagetic sound is low and deep with drums being a distinctive instrument.

As the two main characters are seen together and are having an intimate and personal conversation, there are many close ups and mid shots of them to make the audience feel involved and feel connected to the characters. The setting then changes to the inside of a house with soft, low lighting which shows that this is clearly a private function and the characters are close.

There are more characters in this scene, introducing them to the audience, the atmosphere is happy and friendly as the characters’ faces show this. The characters are wearing formal wear such as suits and dresses which shows that this is an important gathering. Mid shots are used frequently in this scene as well as fading the shots in and out, making the shots run together smoothly.

Analysis Continued… The non diagetic music gets louder as one of the main characters (Bella) cuts her

finger. The music builds tension and adds suspense as does the close up of her finger and then the droplets of blood hitting the floor. The pace of the shots speed up as the pressure builds and the music is loud with more drums and has a slightly faster tempo now, adding to the drama and action. As one character is thrown into a piano, they quickly show a mid shot of Bella’s face, and another characters’ face (Edward) focusing on their reaction to the incident.

The scene changes again to outside in a wooded area and the music has become more calm are quieter. This makes the audience think that normality has been restored. This is a brief scene and has close ups of the two characters’ faces to show the audience their expressions and reactions as they have a strained conversation.

There is then a high angle shot of Bella on her own in the woods, making her look small, insignificant and vulnerable. Then there is a close up of her lying on the ground and a diagetic sound of her breathing, showing the audience that she is distressed and confused. The camera is also rotating as it is zooming in on her, emphasising her disorientation and anxiety.

…The next scene is in an open, grassland area which looks secluded and empty. A

new character has been introduced and seems like he possesses a threat to Bella through the audience’s perspective as they have a close up of his eyes which are red. This colour signifies danger, evil and anger, he is also pacing up and down as he is talking which shows he is anxious and impatient about something. The antagonist is talking about her vulnerability and weakness which he is thinking about using to his advantage. Bella’s defencelessness is also emphasised as the camera circles around her, showing her distress and how she is weak. The camera circling her provokes the audience to think about the danger that she is in, as it is similar to how a vulture circles around its prey. As the antagonist gets closer to her, the shots get closer, the music changes to loud breathing and the editing of the shots are more fast pace.

Next is a mid shot of a new character, the introduction of him to the audience implies that he could be her ‘knight in shining armour’. He looks powerful with the way he is stood and as the music increases he jumps over a porch which demonstrates his strength and begins to run as there is a diagetic sound of growling.

New Moon Analysis…The camera then focuses on Bella’s face as she turns to run away and then the

camera quickly shows a close up of the antagonist’s face as the growling gets louder and the non diagetic music increase in pace. As Bella runs towards the character she ducks down for cover while he leaps up and dramatically changes into a werewolf while letting out a fierce growl.

The shot then fades to black with the title of the film fading out from the black and zooms in before fading away. Also the date of the film’s release is shown in the same way, leaving a sense of mystery and bewilderment as the trailer ends in a dramatic fashion, leaving the audience wanting more!
