Live Shows Live Indie Rock gigs can draw in a wide variety of people. At more Alternative gigs crowd surfing and mosh pits are more likely to happen as the music makes the audience want to go crazy they love it so much.

Indie gigs are usually very simply set up, band equipment, some dark lighting and smoke. It is more pop artists that create a whole production, such as ‘Katy Perry's California Dreams Tour 2011’

Indie rock bands like their gigs to be all about the music and the audience

ClothingLeather jackets, skinny jeans and band tops are the typical fashion sense for indie rock bands

The Arctic Monkeys show the classic indie rock look. Denim is also a big trend for bands. Dark colours show the more rock/rebellious side to the bands, whereas band that are more indie tend to wear brighter colours and unusual clothing.This is evident with ‘The New Limb’ who all wear bright colours which connote to happiness and lightheartedness.

This primary image of Brandon Flowers of The Killers shows how an indie rock band look on stage. He is in all black and hair gelled. Simple but effective as the show isn't about the costumes for indie rock bands, its about the music and lyrics.Katy Perry differs from this as a pop star as her tour was about the performance, how she looked and what she wore.

Clothing is an important part of being a music artist. It categorizes you into what genre you are and helps relate you to your target audience. Pop artists will wear bright bold outfits that catch everyone's attention, whereas indie rock artist will wear simple dark clothing as the audience they are trying to reach would generally dress the same. This gives a connection between artist and fan. As my magazine will be based on indie rock artists the models will be wearing dark clothes, leather jackets and band tops.

Dr Martens are very popular boots with rock bands. They are heavy duty and can last. Connotations of Dr Martens are punks, who re considered rebellious. Rock artist have taken inspiration from punks recently in their clothing

Make Up

Men in the indie rock world are also known to war makeup. In Brandon Flowers early career he was know for wearing eyeliner. This makes him stand out as an artist and also darkens his appearance which is what The Killers were doing at the time, they were experiencing a change in music.

KISS are a major, globally known rock band. Their image is what catches peoples eye. All 4 of them wear black and white make up. This makes them extremely individual as nobody else could every do something similar or they would be considered to be copying them and not being individual themselves, which is a big part of indie rock. Their outrageous make up is parallel to their music which is loud and heavy. Their make up doesn't compare well with their fans as not all of their fans will wear make up, however as a rock band they are all about the music so they can look however they want as long as the music is quality.

Women in rock usually keep their makeup dark. They have dark eye shadow and dark lipstick. This shows the rebelliousness of rock. Women are generally expected to look innocent and have perfect hair/makeup, whereas women in rock challenge this convention with messy hair, dark makeup and often scandalous clothing
