Survey

• We carried out a survey with 20 people asking them several questions related to our research.

• This helped us to evaluate different preferences and target groups to help us understand more about the characteristics of children who watch TV as this is our chosen project.

Gender/Age ResearchWe gathered our sample of twenty children aged 6-16 and gave

them basic questions so we could record our findings on their ages and genders. This would allow us to see what relationship the preferences of the children have with their age and gender. The highest number of a certain age group we had were in the 13-15 years old zone and we had substantially more males than females.

For the first question relating to our subject we asked ‘what is your preferred type of TV show?’ and as you can see the most popular type of TV show is drama. This shows that programmes such as Waterloo Road must be very popular with young people. This may be because of the fact that it’s based in a school and they can relate it to their everyday lives. We expected more people to like musical TV shows due to the emergence of popular shows of this genre such as Glee and the film High School Musical, which were a big hit amongst young children. However this did not materialise and perhaps shows that this was a trend that is dying out.

We asked this question so we could relate it to what type of theme tune we would use for our children’s TV show as it allowed us to see what types of music are trending at the moment. We found that pop and indie were the two most popular which we expected because they are targeted at people of a young age and they are more regularly in the charts. Pop tends to be aimed at the youngest audience and indie tends to be aimed towards teenagers.

This question was important as it will help us to decide when our programme would be shown. We expected the 5-7pm time slot to be the most popular because this is when children have finished school and spend their free time watching TV. Therefore the reason the rest of the time slots are less popular is because young people are not watching TV at these times of day. The British national watershed is at 9 o clock and shows with excessive swearing or adult have to be shown after this point , however this shouldn't’ be a problem to us as we are aiming our show at younger audience members with only a small percentage of our sample watching TV after 7pm.

The results of this question were also expected because TV has become a fundamental part of everyday life for all ages with the younger generations being especially involved with television. On average digital television is now on in 92.7 percent of households, and two thirds of all households have three television sets. This shows that TV is pivotal in the modern era and the only surprising thing about this Pie Chart was that only 50% of our survey watch TV everyday as we expected this to be much larger.
