Sound To ensure the correct atmosphere for the sequence is maintained, sound must be mixed very carefully. Selective Sound – Emphasis key sounds within sequence. Ambient Sound – Creating particular atmosphere or sense of place. Sound Bridges – Sound to help transitions between sequences pass more fluidly (connecting shots.) Sound Effects – To create sense of realism or psychological impact/effect. Diegetic – Sound source visible on screen Voices Objects Music represented as instruments Non Diegetic – Sound source not visible on screen Voice overs (internal) Sound effects There can be transitions between non diegetic and diegetic where sounds will enter the world. Synchronous – To reinforce the event, when a sound effect matches the physical event. Asynchronous – Sound originates outside the diegetic reality (soundtrack.) Contrapuntal – Noise or sound effect which doesn’t match visuals, often juxtaposed to create alternate meaning. Voiceover – Voice of character, often guides or informs the external audience, may be used to push them in the wrong narrative direction. Theme Music – Introduces, develops throughout film often ends, maybe indicate personality or emotional journey, symbolise iconic events.
