Sober textual analysis There is a medium shot which is used to show the artist emotion but also their surrounding for instance the mise-en scene of the messed up house and the party clothes, this links to the emotion the artist is trying to convey there is also a flash back which relates to the narrative. There are several quick cuts and long shots to show the audience the mise-en-scene. The mise-en- scene of the location and clothes suggest that a party has taken place. The quick cuts are used to reflect the impulse, improvised and compulsive behaviour which takes place in a party. The artist is considered a rock, pop and rock indie artist, however most would relate Pink to her distinct rock vocals and so the director made use of this. He used the understanding of the rock brand image to his advantage. Most rock artist are considered hard ‘party animals’ and so the narrative in the video is highly based around this concept. The use of relating the typical brand image to the video was most likely to engage the audience. However the image is twisted slightly as it’s not the typical positive image. This links to the representation of the artist and how the outside world perceives the genre of rock. The use of voyeurism is also used in this music video which has an impact on the target audience as we are lining in a patriarchal society in this video there are two girls both being pink you could argue that that she kisses herself and not a male is her suggesting her own dominance and independence. There is the use of stage lights, the contrasting colours of white and red being used reflects the conflicting emotion the main character is experiencing which links to the narrative in the video, this also relates to the context of the lyrics. The colours red conotates danger and risk and overall a negative impact and white the opposite this helps to give the audience a obvious indication in a visual way the emotions which the director hoped to convey. Regarding the andrew Goodwin theory. Where he discusses that music videos can illustrate the meaning of lyrics and genre, providing a sometimes over literal set of images. We see the Pink that artist kissing herself which is done through the use of super imposing two images together this was successful in implying the message behind the story line.
