My Science Experiment
By Susannah P.
My science experiment is: Can distractions help relieve pain?
The materials I had to get were these:Water
IceA bin large enough to hold feet. ( I used
our foot bath) volunteers
ThermometerAnd blank data tables.
Materials
HypothesisMy hypothesis
is that distractions will increase
pain tolerance.
Procedure
The control test was where you stuck your foot into ice water with no distractions.
Control test Seconds in water without distractions
Alyssa 44 seconds
Mom 68 seconds
Me 21 seconds
Note: I tested my sister and my dad but they maxed out every test so you do not see them in the data tables.
Next step: Video Games
Next I tested everyone while playing Skylanders.
Video game test Seconds in water while playing Skylanders
Alyssa 39 seconds
Mom 180 seconds (maxed out)
Me 52 seconds
Final test: Readers DigestReading Test Seconds in the water
while reading
Alyssa 40 seconds
Mom 61 seconds
Me 27 seconds
Data tables
Difference Data table video game
Difference from control in seconds
Alyssa 5 seconds less
Mom 112 seconds more
Me 31 seconds more
Difference Data table Reading
Difference from control in seconds
Alyssa 4 seconds less
Mom 7 seconds less
Me 6 seconds more
Control test Seconds in water
Alyssa 44 seconds
Mom 68 seconds
Me 21 seconds
Conclusion
I was half correct. The majority of people do better with video games. Reading must not help because you are not interacting with anything. You will end up focusing on the pain, not the words.
