MUSIC

As a group we all have a common interest in music, furthermore we all have an interest in the underground unknown music industry.

As a group we have done research into music documentary's and believe that this would make the most effective production, which we would be passionate about. Indie music will therefore be the basis of our production and we will look to develop our concepts around this.

There are 2 different concepts we will look to explore throughout our research. However the basis of our documentary will be independent and unknown music.

CONCEPTS

Following the brief our group have decided to move forward with 2 concepts ;

• Looking at unknown bands and the constraints of being signed and unsigned within the music industry.

• Profiling a band

Concept 1

The initial concept is to create a documentary which looks at the negatives and positives of being signed and unsigned within such as competitive industry such as the music industry. Within this we would look to get Interviews, Montage and performance footage. Within the interviews we will look to gain a first hand perspective of artists own experiences and their opinions. Within this we will look to contact a number of bands and use several artists throughout the interviews and performances to give a more diverse response to questions which will look at the positives and negatives of being signed and unsigned .

This concept appears to be more feasible as it isn’t reliant upon one band, as these bands may have tight schedules or become disinterested in our project. Therefore using a number of different bands will allow the flexibility if things get cancelled or bands do decide they don’t want to do our documentary.

INSPIRATION – RISE OF THE BEDROOM PRODUCER This documentary is similar to the production we want to create, as it looks at all

aspects of producing music on a low budget. Although the narrative and genre of music is different it emulates what we hope to produce as it mixes ; montage footage, interviews and performances. Providing different perspectives.

INSPIRATION – CONCEPT 2

The inspiration for our second concept is music documentary ‘Blame miss Barclay’ which presents an engaging insight into the artist Mikill journey to music. The camera follows his pursuit to find his old teacher ‘Mrs Barclay’ who inspired him to move into the music industry, and instilled the drive within him to become a well know Hip Hop British rap artists. The documentary is emotive, and provides the viewer with a perspective ,that they wouldn’t be able to gain otherwise.

Within our documentary we would be looking to provide this alternative view on a band. However within this we will be looking to incorporate other elements which contribute to provide a more overall profile of a band or artist. So within this we will be looking to film location shoots of the band performing, getting feedback from the fans and potentially following the band during their day to day life.

The inspiration behind the documentary is provide people with a new perspective on a well known topic like music. Showing the potentially mundane activities such as setting up, which people wouldn’t otherwise have asses to. And allowing the viewer to gain greater understanding of people behind the music.

Although as a group we would like to go forward with this second concept, it is not viable as bands and artists we have approached so far don’t appear to be willing to give up the large amount of time we would need to filming. However we will continue to contact bands in the chance that a band or artists will be interested in our concept.

PROFESSOR GREEN UNSEEN

This music documentary provides a more real insight into the daily workings of an artist this being professor green. In this professor green identifies with the camera more and the audience is made aware of that. Showing his personal interaction with the fans. This documentary mixes reality with live music performances. From this video we would be looking to do similar live performances with a similar camera following interaction. However we will be looking to make ours more formal.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD – EDUCATIONAL MAGAZINE

• We will be looking to develop a double page spread which will review our documentary.

• The review will be similar to articles which feature in media industry magazines such as ‘sight and sound’, a media magazine. Therefore it will be a sophisticated article which will be well written and will review the good and bad elements of our production. Providing the reader with the writers opinion on the documentary, as a group we will be writing this review together.

• Conventional double page spreads within sight and sound are shown bellow however as a group we may look to do something more adventurous however still confirmative to a DPS that you would expect to see in sight and sound.

• Due to the form of our documentary being a short documentary, we will look to place the DPS in an academic magazine as this is the only available audience who will have an interest in a music documentary. For example in a mass market publication such as Q it is very rare to see them take an interest in smaller productions as this does’t appeal to the mass market.

ANCILLARY TASKS- POSTER FOR FILM

Within the ancillary tasks we are looking to create a film poster, this will be used conjunction with the music documentary. Many film documentary's look to concentrate on the using the artist to advertise the film. We will further research this and look to conform to this.

Following the development of the narrative arc, we can further look at what sort of shot we will be needing to represent the film. We want our poster to represent the documentary as it will need to encourage the audience to want to see the film.

Following our form research into film posters we will have a better idea of what needs to go into our poster.
