Mise-en-scene

By: Hamzaa Zamir

mise en scene encompasses the most recognizable attributes of a film – the setting and the actors; it includes costumes and make-up, props, and all the other natural and artificial details that characterize the spaces filmed.

SettingResident Evil Apocalypse is filmed in Raccoon City which is in Pennsylvania USA and in Toronto Canada. The reason why they filmed in two different countries is because they wanted to expand the location and not base it on one city.

The picture above is the fictional city Raccoon City which is in the movie but in real life is Toronto. It is a wide screen panorama and shows lots of sky scrappers and buildings which connotes that this is a busy business center. At the background is the suburbs of the city with lots of greenery and small buildings.

PropsThe props in Resident Evil are mostly weapons such as guns, machine guns, knives and so on. There are also props that are nothing to do with weapons, like newspapers, the virus. These all link to the movie and even though they are small props they play an important role in the movie.

The pictures above are two of many props in Resident Evil. The first picture is the T virus being put into a metal case in a science lab which is a very important prop because the virus will cause all the coming disaster. The second prop is the news paper which reads in bold “The Dead Walk” in an almost greyish mist which represents the disaster that has happened. The two props clearly represents the before and after.

Lighting and Colour

For lighting and Colour I have chosen this scene from Resident Evil as you can see above. First of all the sky is very dark with grey smoke which represents fire and danger. The ground is very dark as well almost like it was burned, the police car is flashing its lights which is representing help. Overall the scene is very dark and gloomy with a bit of orange and white light to highlight the buildings. The fire is the central light which is the main focus of the image

Costume hair and make- upAlice who is played by Milla Jovovitch I the main start in the resident Evil series. If you look at her hair its almost like greasy and very untidy which indicates she was in a fight with zombies. If you look at her eyes its like she has not slept in a while and is always alert.

Her arm looks very injured because if you look carefully its like she was burnt. Also her neck is dirty and bruised from all the fights she has been in.

If you look at her face its dirty like with mud and smoke which again indicates she was in a fight.

Facial expressions and body language

This is Jill valentine played by sienna. As soon as you see her face you can clearly see what her facial expressions are, her eyes tells us all. It almost looks as if she is seeing something strange and figuring out what it is or what's happening.

Her body language is very obvious. In her right hand she is holding a gun to protect her self.

In her left hand there is a touch and she is putting it under the gun, to help her see and to help her aim on what the gun is pointing at.

Positioning and space

This shit is very interesting and has a lot of meanings. First of all you can see Alice in front of a glass stained window of a church, and at her face there is a light shining on her which represents she is sent down to help by God. Also at the sides of the window its pitch black with gothic styled lamppost lights. This picture lets us see the meaning of the scene and how much space is needed for the scene.

Visual effects

The visual effect here is the nemesis which is the monster in resident evil. From the face it is a mask which is painted and is made out of latex, while the all of the lower body is someone wearing a costume then added by visual effects.
