Experimental Film

The Beautiful Thing (Short Film) The genre of this film is romance and documentary. This is because the film is about a boy who is looking for a

girl to go to the prom with, who cannot find a girl. But at the same time they are documenting on what they are doing. The camera angles they have applied in this short 6 minute film are close up of the boy picking his phone up and texting, long shot when the boy is walking to find a girl to take to the prom, eye line when they are looking at each other in the hall way, medium shot when the two actors are sitting on the bench and extreme close up of the male actors face when walking away. They also have fade in when the film starts fade out at the ending title.

The audience for experimental films would be mainly girls because the film is a romantic documentary However males may be also interested In this film because the main character is a male which then the male audience could but themselves in the main characters shoes. The film is about a boy who is searching for a girl to go to the prom and each girl he speaks to turns him down. But when he meets this deaf girl she replies and they keep meeting each other at a bench in the school. But then another boy also is interested in her so the boy has a competition but then when he asks her to the prom in sign language she replies a yes. The lighting they have use din this film is that they have used natural lighting to film the movie outside and inside. In this film there are lots of different locations but the main location is at the school. Other locations is in the boys home and the school grounds. The actors are dressed up as they would if they were going to school which is in their own clothes. Their ages are between 14-16 seen as they are in the final year of school and the prom is coming up. I would say the two main characters the girl and the boy are aged 16=17 which is when you finish high school.

ORPHEUS (2011) The genre of this short 6 minute film is experimental this is because they have it has been

filmed on a 16mm lens. The topic is also difficult and the topic is grief. There are lots of locations in this film and they all have the same kind of gritty effect which makes the picture look old and something from a horror movie. The locations are their home, abandoned rotted building, inside car (driving), bar and a film studio. The camera angles they have used is lots of close ups, medium shots and a long shot. This is because the director wants to capture the subject as best as possible which will enhance the storyline and pull the audience in. The story is about

They have used studio lighting when they have been filming in a studio. However when they haven't been filming in a studio they have used natural lighting to make the scene look realistic as possible in both situations. The audience is for people who either has experienced grief or haven’t, educational use from ages 11-18. You could also be interested in this if you are creating a experimental film. The main and only actors in the film is a young man and his girlfriend. You only see the girlfriend a couple of times in the film but you do hear her voice talking to the man.

“A dark, experimental take on the five greatest stages of grief, as a lone man, trapped in a nightmarish world, searches for his lost lover.”

Hollis Frampton Poetic Justice (1972) “Hollis Frampton’s Poetic Justice cleverly and humorously calls attention to the nature

of film itself and its vanity. Essentially” The correct way is the right way which is what the title of the short experimental film is.

The story is written so as you are reading the script you are imagining the scene at the same time in your mind. They have used cut scene for example when they are turning the page you do not see them. In They have used natural lighting in the short film which is because they have no action. You are also concentrating on reading the script which wouldn’t need artificial lighting if you had natural light in the room and it wasn’t filmed in a studio. The audience would be people who like to read books. The ages that I would say that would be interested in this would be the older generation between 50+ because they like to read and they usually have more patience to concentrate and to realize and to imagine what the story is about. They could be also interested in this type of film because it could be the how the older generation were brought up to read books because they didn’t have the technology we have in the present day. The genre of this film would be experimental because it is doing something different. Which is instead of the viewer seeing what his happening, they are reading the script but at the same time they are imagining and creating their own film. The location of this film could be filmed in the drawing room, bedroom or a office which is usually where people may read. Or because its experimental it could be filmed in a anonymous location.

“film festivals with 65 million teens watching and participating”. This suggests that short films are very popular with teenagers. This could be due to the shortness and the content in the films.“Spanish film-maker PEDRO ALMODOVAR has accepted an invitation by New York's Museum Of Modern Art to make available his rarely seen, and controversial, early experimental short films from the 1970s.”This quote could state that Almodovar films have unusual subjects that people may not like but that may make the film interesting for who are wanting to watch it and which could make it experimental because it has unusual subjects.

Ethnographic Ethnographic is the study of people and

cultures. This links with experimental film because you are studying them whilst watching the film and trying to figure out what its about so if you study them then you may be able to figure out. I could also use this in my film because if you are studying different people or cultures you could film something that hasn’t been filmed which is related to the Spanish filmmaker on slide 3.

Magazine “For me, experimental film is essentially a

broad strokes or umbrella term for moving images that explore the human condition, nature, or fantasy in ways that haven’t been traditionally explored before.” This suggests that experimental films are different in which they are made. So in another genre they would be specific but as it says “explores” it is saying that you put things into the film about the human condition.
