Reggaeton

• Reggaeton blends West Indian music influences of reggae and dancehall with those of Latin America, such as bomba, plena, salsa, merenque, latin pop, cumbia and bachata as well as that of hip hop, contemporary R&B, and electronica. However, reggaeton is also combined with rapping or singing in Spanish. The influence of this genre has spread to the wider Latino communities in the United States, as well as the Latin American audience.

Bomba is one of the folk musical styles of Puerto Rico.

Although there is some controversy surrounding its

origin, most agree that it is a largely African-derived music.

The rhythm and beat are played by a set of hand drums

and a maraca.

•La Plena is an Afro-Puerto Rican music, “a hybrid musical form that integrates both European and African elements in its’ form and lyrics”, but was first dismissed as “La musíca de Negroes”

• The Merenque is one of the most popular dance and music styles in the world. Its origins are from the "perico ripiao" ensembles from the Dominican Republican region of Cibao. "Perico ripiao" originally referred to a method of cooking the "perico", or parrot. After a successful hunt, the families would "party down".

• Reggaeton's roots started off as Spanish reggae in Panama. The music eventually made its way and continued evolving and coming to prominence in Puerto Rico where it became reggaeton. Reggaeton started as an adaptation of Jamaican reggae (and later Jamaican lala to the Spanish language and overall culture in Panama.The origins of reggaeton begin with the first reggae recordings being made in Panama during the late 1970s.
