Distribution companies

A film distribution companies job is to make the finished product available to public viewing, they do this through P&A (printing and advertising).

P&A is done through traditional marketing and Viral Marketing.

Traditional vs. Viral

Traditional marketing consists of media products like posters, newspapers and billboards.

Viral marketing means advertising through the internet using email and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. Pictures International is a global leader in the marketing and distribution of feature films, operating offices in more than 30 countries and releasing films in over 120 international territories, either directly to theatres or in conjunction with partner companies and co-ventures. http://www.warnerbros.com/studio/about/company-overview.html

Warner Bros. is such a big company conglomerate that it produces and distributes its own films all within the company. They also distribute other films outside of their company but they go for big Hollywood films similar to that of their own. They have an arm in Britain but still only distribute big budget films

Suitable? Warner Bros. is not suitable for distributing my film as it deals mainly with big budget Hollywood films such as The Hangover which was a $35 million budget film and made $45 million on the opening weekend and grossed $467 million worldwide. It also had deals with some British films but they are also big budget and therefore cant be applied to my film.

The Walt Disney Studios distributes motion pictures under Walt Disney Pictures - which includes Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios and DisneyToon Studios - Touchstone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures. Disney is one of the big six in America as it is a conglomerate that produces and distributes its own films. They are well known for their U-rated animated films but also have companies like touchstone and Hollywood pictures that deal with older rated films. They are all big budget films.

Disney is not suitable for distributing my film as it distributes big budget Hollywood films like Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End which was a $300 million budget film and made $140 million on the opening weekend and grossed $960 million worldwide. Therefore this company is unsuitable as my film is an independent British film.

Fox Searchlight Pictures

Fox Searchlight Pictures, established in 1994, is a film division of Fox Filmed Entertainment alongside the larger Fox studio 20th Century Fox. It specialises in independent and British films, alongside dramedy and horror as well as non-English-language films, and is variously involved with the production and/or distribution of these films. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_Searchlight_Pictures

Fox Searchlight distributes a wide range of films but mainly independent and British films as they are a smaller company that comes from 20th Century Fox which deals with the big budget Hollywood films.

Fox Searchlight Pictures is suitable to distribute my film as they distribute independent films like Slumdog Millionaire which was a $15 million budget film that made $360 thousand on the opening weekend and grossed $141 million in the USA. This company distribute a lot of independent British films so therefor they are a suitable choice.

Entertainment is the UK’s leading independent distributor. Entertainment has had success with big box office hits such as Gangs of New York, Hairspray, Sex and the City ,Saw, 17 Again and The Final Destination franchise and British films such as Stormbreaker, Run Fat Boy Run and St Trinian’s 1 & 2. http://www.entertainmentfilms.co.uk/about-us

Entertainment Film Distributors operates in the UK and in the Republic of Ireland and distributes in theatrical, DVD rental and retail fields as well as licensing a substantial catalogue in both Pay-TV and Free-TV sectors. They distribute big budget and independent British films.

Entertainment Film Distributors is suitable for distributing my film as it distributes independent films such as Saw which was a $1 million budget film that made £1 million on the opening weekend and grossed $102 million worldwide. It also distributes British independent films.

Conclusion

I think that Fox Searchlight Pictures would be the most appropriate choice of companies to distribute my film as they deal with independent British films as well as specialising in the horror genre, which is exactly what my film is. It is also a company that is part of the big company 20th Century Fox and so have a good reputation for distributing successful films.
