EVALUATION Q1: HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP AND CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA TEXTS?
SOAP OPERA CONVENTIONS
Soap operas
start off with an
establishing shot
so the audience
know the
characters
location and
position
This is then
followed by over
the shoulder
shots, big close
ups and medium
close ups.
Then is ends
with a reaction
from the
characters.
This was done to make the audience feel that they were in the room with the characters
We brought
the camera
down to the
characters
level
The heads of
both characters
appear in the
top half so we
feel on the
same level as
them
We filmed the
fight scene with
a hand help
camera to make
the audience
feel like they
were part of the
action.
This helps to create tension and suspense.
The eye lines
are in the
same place
The medium close up helps us engage and connect with the character and we feel his fear.
The dark
clothing wore
by the
character
helps to
create mise
en scene
This clothing was chose as this would be what a stereotypical drug dealer may wear
This create a shifty looking character
The long
dark ally
way also
creates mise
en scene
This helps to set the scene and the
audience get an idea of
whats about to happen.
We used a vignette
effect on the video
This was because it was light outside
and we wanted to create dull lighting and dull mood
This tells the
audience to
feel worried or
concerned.
We challenged the
conventions and
used black and
white. This is not
usually a
convention of soap
operas
This was done so the audience
knew it was a flash back.
It also allowed
the audience
to establish a
connection
between the
two
characters
Title cards were used to
tell the narrative and make it even
clearer.
We used a parallel
narrative where
the clips shift from
one individuals
story and then in
our case these
stories meet.
This means the audiences know before the characters and will be nervous for when they meet
This is when the
two stories
meet
This is effective as the audience have seen the two characters before and will understand why it is bad that they have met
The song we used was Clarion call by Delphic
•We took away the lyrics and just had the instrumental
•This was done as we felt the music was strong enough on its own
•The music starts of quiet and becomes in louder quite quickly when Ash walks in on Frankie and Jamie.
•This build up tension and tells the audience to expect something to happen.
