Page 1: Proposal

Title of magazine Amplified! Which genre have you chosen and why? I have chosen the sub-genre rock for my magazine. I have chosen this

because I listen to rock music myself, therefore, I already have a fair idea about the target audience and the content of what would be in a music magazine. Furthermore, I have many friends in my group who also listen to this music, so it would be very helpful to use their knowledge as well as my own.

Target Audience My target audience is going to be both male and female (my research shows that both genders listen to this type of music) teenagers around 16-19. They enjoy listening to different bands ranging from heavy metal and rock music.

Initial ideas for the Front Cover For my front cover, there will be a thin header at the top to inform my target audience of what this issue of the magazine entails. This follows the conventions for a magazine, as many of them have headers at the top of the page. Below this, I will have my masthead in big white letters. Because this is the first issue of the magazine, I need to make my masthead noticeable to the audience to allow an identity to be created. To further emphasise this, it means I will have to have the masthead on top of the main image. For the main image, I’m going to have a long shot of the featured band of my double page spread. I would position them so that the lead singer appears at the front and the rest of the band stand behind to form a slight “v” shape. The lead singer is going to be posing slightly sideways near the centre of the page. This allows me to put cover lines either side of the page. In the centre of the main image, many magazines have a main cover line which over laps the centre of the image; I am going to use this convention for my main cover line. For the rest of the cover lines, I am going to have them either side of the page in line with members of the band. Near the bottom of the page, I am going to have a pug advertising a free CD with every issue of the magazine. In the bottom right hand corner of the page I will include the bar code.

Initial ideas about the Contents Page For the contents page, I am going to have the masthead at the top of the page with just the words “Contents…” The masthead will be coloured the same as the front cover, which will be white and will also be in that same

font, to reinforce the idea of creating an identity. The background will be a constant dark grey colour. On the right hand side of the page will be the pages references to the featured stories, playlists, reviews and interviews etc. the headings for each will be in block white capitals, and behind it will be a dark grey rectangular box to make it stand out. On the opposite side ogf the page references, I am going to have three pictures, the one at the top is going to be positioned straight, whilst the other two will be tilted (opposing each other).

Initial ideas for the Double Page Spread For the double page spread, I am going to split the page into two. On the one page, I am going to have a high angled, medium close up shot of the band the article is based off with the heading somewhere near the bottom of the image. In the background, I’m just going to have a plain simple colour, or a dark greenish field, as this will not detract the attention of the target audience from the article. In the right hand corner of the page, I will have in relatively big letter, the name of the band “Cyanide” as it’s an article about an upcoming band that wouldn’t have been heard of. On the other page, I am going to have the main article with the standfirst, in a white rectangular shape, above the main article. Within the article I’m going to embed pull quotes, as this seems this attracts the audience’s attention to the article, giving a bigger chance of the audience reading the article. The text will be in a readable white font, as this will contrast with the dark background, making it easier for the audience to read.

Initial ideas about Photographs For the main image on my front cover, I’m going to have a medium shot of the whole band in front of a dark blue/purple background. They’re going to be in a “v” formation with the lead singer at the front of the photo. In the image, I just plan to have the band in rock style clothing, with no instruments, as this will focus the target audience’s attention on the band. I plan to have the band either standing casually, or posing in an expressive rock style pose. For the contents page, I am going to have an image of a male imitating a pose from the lead singer from 30 seconds to mars, Jared Leto. This is a close up image of my model looking side on at the camera with a straight, almost expressionless face. For the clothing, due to the angle and closeness

of the shot, you won’t really see much of the models clothes. However, I he will be wearing a greyish black jacket, maybe a denim jacket. For the next image, I am going to have a female imitating the lead singer from pretty reckless, Taylor Momsen. This is a medium close up shot of the model tilting her head to the side, facing the camera. For the double page spread, I’m going to have the band from the front cover on the double page spread. For this image, I am going to have a high angled shot pointing down at the band, whilst they are looking up at the camera. Again, they are going to be wearing rock style clothing, but this may differ from the front cover image. Furthermore, for this page, The band are going to have some props with them, like guitars and maybe a microphone.
