In the debut comics the creator colored the character gray, he wanted a color that did not suggest any particular ethnic group.

The colorist however, had problems with the gray coloring, resulting in different shades of gray. After seeing the first published issue, it was decided to change the skin color to what it currently is. The #302 reintroduced the gray character in flashbacks set close to the origin story.
