--Managed the production for “Bleeding Hearts”, a nine-room walk-through album experience--Recruited and managed a staff of over 30 volunteers to support various areas of production, including film, music, art installation, and performance--Oversaw and played a role in all aspects of production including conceptual development, venue booking, artist curation, website content, press release, ticket sales, event promotions, studio bookings, and set design--Designed and installed my own installation, The Poetry Room, which integrated the love letters of individuals who submitted their works online in advance

IGNITE THETA

SO WHAT IS THETA?

THETA + HUMANS

THE THETA WAVE IS AN OSCILLATORY RHYTHM WITH OUR BRAIN. IT IS EXPERIENCED BY EVERY HUMAN BEING. MEASURED AT 4 TO 7 HZ, WE EXPERIENCE THETA WAVES DURING REM SLEEP, THE STATE BETWEEN OUR CONSCIOUS AND SUBCONSCIOUS MIND. DEPENDING ON ONES HABITS AND SLEEP CYCLES, THE AMOUNT ONE EXPERIENCES THETA MAY VARY AMONG PERSON TO PERSON.

THE THETA WAVE IS ACCESSED IN MORE WAYS THAN REM SLEEP. PEOPLE WHO PRACTICE DEEP MEDITATION ALSO ENTER INTO THE THETA WAVE. SHAMANS USE THE STEADY BEAT OF A DRUM TO INDUCE A LUCID STATE (4 TO 7 HZ) IN TO HEAL ONE’S AILMENTS AND REVEAL THE WISDOM OR TEACHINGS OF THEIR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND. THETA HEALERS, PRACTICE A HOLISTIC HEALING MODALITY THAT INVOLVES MOVING THE MIND INTO A STATE OF INTUITION (4 TO 7 HZ) WHILE FOCUSING ON ONES THOUGHTS TO ENVISION AN INTENDED OUTCOME. GRAND MAL IS A DOME THAT WAS DESIGNED AND BUILT BY IMAGE NODE AT BURNING MAN 2010. THE THETA DOME IS SIMILAR IN NATURE, BUT THE AUDIO AND VISUAL DISPLAYS AN ENTIRELY NEW SEQUENCE. MODELED AFTER THE THETA BRAINWAVE, THE OUTPUT RESULTS IN A SLOWER BUILD OF ORGANIC RHYTHMS, SMOOTHER TRANSITIONS; TO PRODUCE A MORE SERENE EFFECT.

AUDIO GENERATION IS NOT LIMITED TO ABLETON; ANYTHING THAT RESPONDS TO MIDI MESSAGES CAN BE CONTROLLED BY OUR SOFTWARE AND MADE TO SYNCHRONIZE WITH THE LIGHTS. BUCKY LIFELONG COMMITMENT TO DESIGN SCIENCE IS AN INSPIRATION. IT IS THIS TYPE OF THINKING AND APPROACH TO LIFE THAT CAN REDEFINE THE FUTURE OF OUR GENERATION.

THE GEODESIC DOME

HOW WE FEEL

DESIGN APPROACH

FIRST PATENTED BY BUCKMINSTER FULLER IN 1954, THE GEODESIC DOME IS ONE OF THE MOST ENERGY EFFICIENT STRUCTURES KNOWN TO DATE. BASED ON A SERIES OF TRIANGULAR ELEMENTS, THE DOME IS LIGHT IN MATERIAL, QUICK TO ASSEMBLE AND BREAK DOWN, AND HIGHLY RESISTANT TO THE FORCES OF NATURE.

IN A PERSONAL INTERVIEW, FULLER RECALLS HIS VISIONS OF RESTRUCTURING THE WORLD AS A GEOMETRIC UTOPIA. YEARS LATER BUCKY BECOMES ONE OF THE GREATEST INVENTORS OF OUR TIME, AND COMMITS HIS LIFE TO A GRAND DESIGN FOR THE BETTER OF HUMANITY. HIS PHILOSOPHY IS SIMPLE, “DOING MORE WITH LESS.”



SAMPLE THETA SEQUENCE

DURING A GUIDED MEDITATION, SEQUENCES OF AMBIENT LIGHT AND AUDIO DRONE WILL SLOWLY PULSATE AND EXPAND, ACTIVELY RESPONDING TO THE LEVEL OF HUMAN ACTIVITY IN THE ROOM.

THIS SEQUENCE IS ONE EXAMPLE OF A CUSTOM LED OUTPUT DESIGNED TO ACTIVATED THE THETA WAVE. LED OUTPUT VARY BASED ON HUMAN ACTIVITY. ADDITIONAL LEDS CAN BE SYNCED TO AUDIO INPUTS, SUCH AS AN AMBIENT DJ SET, VIA MIDI.

ORIEL POOLE IS AN EXPERIENCE DESIGNER INSPIRED BY CULTURE, ORGANIC FORM, AND CONCEPTS THAT RECONSTRUCT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE GUEST AND THEIR SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT. SHE HAS WORKED WITH CLIENTS SUCH AS EVOLVER.NET, PRESTON BAILEY DESIGN, GRATITUDE NYC, CONNECTED PRODUCTIONS, AND AEG LIVE. RECENTLY, ORIEL LEAD THE PRODUCTION LEAD FOR BLEEDING HEARTS, A WALK-THROUGH ALBUM RELEASE EVENT FEATURING 9 ROOMS OF MUSIC, INSTALLATION, AND PERFORMANCE ART; SHAPED BY THE PERCEPTION OF LOVE.

TODD POLENBERG IS A NEW MEDIA ARTIST, ELECTRONIC MUSICIAN, AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEER. HE PRODUCES INSTALLATION ART WITH THE FORT/DA COLLECTIVE AND IS A FOUNDING MEMBER OF IMAGE NODE. HE BUILDS LARGE-SCALE LED INSTALLATIONS, PROSTHETIC PERFORMANCE DEVICES, AUDIOVISUAL REMIXES, RITUALS FOR THE SECULAR, AND MEDITATIONS ON THE UNHEIMLICH OF TECHNOLOGY. HIS WORK HAS BEEN SEEN AND HEARDIN PLACES SUCH AS THE MAKER FAIRE, ARS ELECTRONICA, ARTBOTS, ROSELAND, AND BURNING MAN.

JASON CIPRIANI IS A SOFTWARE DESIGNER FOR EMBEDDED SYSTEMS, AUGMENTED REALITY, AND HIGH-PERFORMANCE SIMULATIONS. A LARGE PORTION OF HIS WORK IS SPENT DEVELOPING CUSTOM SOFTWARE AND SEQUENCE PROGRAMMING FOR ARTISTS IN THE FIELD OF LED INSTALLATION. HE IS A CORE MEMBER OF IMAGE NODE AND HAS WORKED WITH NAMES SUCH AS LEO VILLAREAL, FIGMENT, GRATITUDE NYC, NEW HUE, AND BURNING MAN. HIS MODESTY KEEPS HIS BIO TO A MINIMUM.

THE THETA DOME

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

THE THETA DOME IS AN INTERACTIVE ART INSTALLATION DESIGNED TO ENABLE COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS AMONG THE FESTIVAL GUESTS OF PEX SUMMER FESTIVAL.

THE STRUCTURE IS A 4-FREQUENCY GEODESIC DOME MEASURING 24 FEET IN DIAMETER AND FITTED WITH A CUSTOM FITTED METALLIC MYLAR COVER. IT HOLDS OVER 1200 FULL-COLOR LEDS (ON 46 VERTICES) TO CREATE A FULLY IMMERSIVE LIGHTING EXPERIENCE. OUR CUSTOM SOFTWARE PRODUCES PATTERNS OF LIGHT AND SOUND IN RESPONSE TO SENSORY INPUT (SUCH AS MOTION OR THERMAL CONDITIONS WITHIN THE SPACE). THESE PATTERNS ARE MODELED AFTER THE THETA BRAINWAVE AS AN INSTRUMENT TO HEAL.

INITALLY DESIGNED TO HOST GUIDED MEDITATIONS, THE THETA DOME IS A PLACE WHERE GUESTS MAY BREATHE, CONNECT WITH ONE ANOTHER, AND DEEPEN THEIR STATE OF MEDITATION. IT ALSO SERVES AS A MULTI-USE SPACE FOR YOGA AND PILATES WORKSHOPS, THINK-TANK DISCUSSIONS, AND AN AMBIENT LOUNGE.



DESIGN

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIESTHE THETA DOME, DESIGNED AND SEQUENCED WITH OUR CUSTOM HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE, IS CAPABLE OF A VARIETY OF INTERCHANGEABLE AUDIO AND VISUAL COMPONENTS.

OUR LEDS ARE CONTROLLED BY CUSTOM SOFTWARE WHICH CAN RESPOND TO VARIOUS INPUTS.

LEDS CAN BE SET TO AUTOMATE OR RESPOND TO REAL-TIME SENSORY INPUTS, SUCH AS:

- THERMAL SENSORS- MOTION SENSORS- AUDIO SENSORS- KNOB BOXES- STREAMING VIDEO INPUT - VJS, DIGITAL PROJECTION ARTISTS, OR COLOR DATA COLLECTED FROM THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT

VISUALAUDIOOUR DYNAMIC AUDIO SOURCES (SUCH AS MIDI, ABLETON, TRAKTOR, ETC.) CAN ALSO BE USED TO SYNCHRONIZE WITH THE LEDS VIA MIDI.

AUDIO IS AN OPTIONAL COMPONENT THAT CAN BE USED EXTERNALLY (IN THE INSTANCE OF A SPEAKER OR DISCUSSION) OR IN-SYNC WITH THE LIGHTS.

Ma Restaurant and Nightclub - NEWH Sustainable Hospitality Design Competition

Ma Restaurant and Nightclub - Design and Presentation



Inspired by juxtaposition, the title for Ma comes from a Japanese term that means “interval” or “space.” Ma is used in Japanese Taiko music to describe a moment of rest, the pause between two beats on the drum. The Japanese believe it is essential to appreciate the rest, just as one would appreciate the beat of a drum. It is also felt that if a person focuses on the moment of rest, as well as the beat of the drum, they will experience a more rewarding sound.

--Designed a sustainable restaurant and nightclub to meet all LEED CI building construction and FF&E selection specifications--Created all floor plans, details, renderings, and graphics for presentation--Awarded first place for design and research by “NEWH Sustainable Hospitality Design Competition”, April 2009

--Spent a summer on the design and build of “Malthus”, a mobile art installation (art car) devised to reflect the 2010 theme at “Burning Man - Metropolis”--Participated in the “Relaxomatic Plushatorium”, a temporary living environment, where 30 people interdependently lived and worked together in the desert for 10 days--Gained a newfound understanding of the potential for innovation in art, temporary installations, and community oriented events
