Nightwish is a group of power metal and symphonic metal from Kitee, Finland. They are known for their strong and melodic guitar riffs, organ and synthesizer atmospheres, powerful battery and clear bass sound.

Nightwish was formed in 1996 by songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, Emppu Vuorinen guitarist and singer Tarja Turunen. Later drummer Jukka Nevalainen, and bassist Sami Vänskä would join after the release of Angels Fall First (1997). In 2002 Vänskä was replaced by Marco Hietala who also simultaneously is backing voice in banda.

Although Nightwish has been prominent in their home country rather from Angels Fall First they failed to achieve worldwide fame until the release of the albums Oceanborn (1998) Wishmaster (2000) and Century Child (2002). Once launched in 2004 has managed to sell over a million copies, and a breakthrough for the band in the United States. His breakthrough in the U.S. was Wish I Had an Angel (2004) that was part of the soundtrack of the video game Alone in the Dark.

The band released three singles and two music videos for "Once" and a re-recording of "Sleeping Sun" and re-compilation album, Highest Hopes (2005), before the departure of Turunen in October 2005.In May 2007 Nightwish announced as new singer Anette Olzon Swedish to replace Turunen.
